Margery Savin takes on 10-day walk in Costa Rica in aid of St Ann’s

A retired civil servant is preparing for a daunting trek through the dense tropical rainforest in Central America.

She is hoping to raise at least £2,000 from her autumn adventure when she treks across difficult mountainous terrain for more than eight hours a day.

Margery will be 62 when she goes on the trip and is travelling alone but is looking forward to making new friends among her 20-strong party.

She is holding a book swap at Norbury Parish Church between 10 am and 1.30 pm on Saturday, January 28, to raise funds and anyone who wants to swap books, with a small donation to the hospice, can contact her on 07864 936152. Admission to the event is free and books can be taken along on the day.

“St Ann’s Hospice is a very important part of our community and the atmosphere there is amazing,“ said Margery, who is also holding bucket collections and car boot sales. “It’s going to be an arduous trek, sometimes scrambling on my hands and feet, but the challenge is worth it to raise money for the hospice.

“Now that I’m retired I felt that I wanted to do something to help them. St Ann’s needs £16,000 a day just to stay open and that’s an awful lot of money.”
