When my Mum died at St Ann’s Hospice 25 years ago, I promised when I retired I would come back and volunteer. Now I’ve been here 3 years and I’ve never looked back.Mavis Mathews, St Ann’s Hospice volunteer

Olympic silver is a quick win for hospice

People say that one person’s junk is another person’s treasure – well this has proven to be true for a St Ann’s Hospice charity shop in Romiley this week.

Wednesday, January 25, 2012

A set of 28 silver coins commemorating the 1976 Montreal Canada Olympics, complete with leather presentation case, has raised £609.99 for St Ann’s Hospice – a charity that provides care and support free of charge to people with life-limiting illnesses, their families and carers.

The valuable collection was handed to the charity shop on Compstall Road by an anonymous donor earlier this month. Realising the potential value of this gift – particularly in this Olympic year - St Ann’s Hospice put the coins up for sale on eBay. The horde was eventually sold to a local bidder – from Levenshulme.

Anthony Lord, Trading Manager at St Ann’s Hospice, said: “We’re always glad of local people’s generous donations, but it’s particularly exciting when we get given something of significant value.

“All the money raised by the Olympic coins will go directly towards patient care and those services which support it.”
