Support for carers

The needs of carers are often overlooked, but are very real indeed – helping someone who is ill can be emotionally and physically draining.

Who is a carer?

Carers are wives, husbands, partners… parents, grandparents… sons, daughter, friends of neighbours … it can be any one of us.

Why might you need support?

When someone who you are caring for is living with a life threatening illness it is not uncommon for you the carer to experience the same or similar levels of distress as the person you are caring for.

Benefits and finances

Taking on the responsibility of caring for someone who is ill may lead to a loss of income or more pressure on finances. Carers may be entitled to financial help with the costs of caring.

Getting support from professionals

Some of us do find professionals a little daunting. We feel that they will not have time for us; feel that what we might have to say is not very important.

Aids and adaptations

There are many aids and adaptations which can make life easier at home, indeed, which help people remain in their own homes for as long as possible.

Travel and accommodation

Some of you may be planning to come to visit people in St Ann’s hospices from other parts of the country or indeed to be flying in from abroad.

How local authorities can help

Local authorities can help with advice, assessments, applying for a blue badge and benefits

Bereavement support

The role of St Ann’s Hospice is far from over when someone has died: we can also help people come to terms with their loss.

Children and young people

People can be carers at any age. Often a child or young person may be caring for their parent, grandparent or other relative – there is help available to help you manage.

Support for male carers

Over a third of carers in the UK are men. This might not be a role men are used to playing or ever expected to have.

Help with looking after a pet

When we become ill it can become difficult to find the energy and the time to give pets the care and attention that is needed.
