Q:
How would you describe your role?
A: A mixture of therapeutic, assessment and developmental work, with some staff support occasionally thrown in and a pinch of education. It is a role that is challenging and never dull.
Q: What’s a typical day for you?
A: Meeting patients, meeting staff and driving.
Q: What previous experiences have helped you in your post?
A: There are many models and approaches to therapy, each with its own particular emphasis, for example: Developing insight into patients, ventilating emotions, challenging negative thought or practicing alternative behaviours. My therapeutic style varies from patient to patient and also varies throughout the course of working with an individual.
Q: What is the toughest challenge you face?
A: Accepting that the freedom and autonomy the organisation gives me in pursuing the goal of providing the appropriate degree of psychological support for our patients, means accepting a greater degree of responsibility, and dealing with the pressure that brings to ‘get it right’.
Q: What are your greatest rewards?
A: When something goes particularly well with a patient.
