Centre of excellence in palliative care

With more than 36 years as a Hospice, St Ann’s is proud to maintain its status as a centre of excellence in palliative care and we are continuing our reputation as a national leader in the field.

Seven Consultants, led by our Medical Director, Dr Phillip Lomax, have been appointed in recent years to provide the very best in care for our patients, as well as their families and carers.

Dr Lomax said: “The seven Consultants provide a total of just over 2.5 full time roles paid for by the Hospice. All the Consultants have roles outside the Hospice involving supporting patients in local hospitals and in the community as well as St Ann’s. This enables us to follow patients across these settings, improve continuity of care and promote the work of St Ann’s Hospice at a high level.”

The medical team together with Dr Lomax, includes Dr David Waterman, Dr Stephanie Gomm, Dr Wendy Makin, Dr Claire Haskins, Dr Feargal Twomey and Dr Iain Lawrie, who between them cover both Hospices at Little Hulton and Heald Green, as well as our Neil Cliffe Cancer Care Centre at Wythenshawe.

The latest Consultant to join us is Dr Iain Lawrie, who qualified and worked for several years as a physiotherapist, before moving to Leicester to study medicine. He qualified as a General Practitioner, and spent a period as prison doctor to 400 life-inmates before entering specialist training in Palliative Medicine in 2003. An eighth Consultant in Palliative Care, Dr Sophie Harrison, will be joining in May to share duties with Dr Haskins.

The Consultants are supported by Dr Alison Phippen, Associate Specialist, together with a team of GP Clinical Assistants and junior doctors.
