Both the individual who is in need of palliative care and those involved with caring for them can experience a complex array of emotional, physical, psychological, spiritual and social difficulties. They have a right to expect sensitive, empathic, informed care.
This course, by using experiential approaches to learning, offers the opportunity for course members to explore and examine their own attitudes, feelings and beliefs toward nursing those facing a life- threatening condition. Attendees will have the opportunity to reflect upon and enhance their own communication and interpersonal skills, and learn how to respond to the myriad of emotional changes in an informed and articulate manner.
The course is offered at Level 2 (diploma) or Level 3 (degree) and attracts 20 CATS points through the University of Manchester School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Visiting. The course is held twice a year: April and September.
Dates:
The course runs over a period of 12 weeks on a day release basis (usually Tuesdays). In addition, there is an initial 2-day study block, 5 study days and a 10-day clinical placement during this period. The placement will usually take place between the planned dates, however, if this is not possible individual negotiation will take place.
Costs
The cost of the module is £450. This fee can be paid prior to the student
undertaking the course, or in the case of the student self-funding, as part
of a rolling programme. More details are available on request. Students should
be aware that this course is not part of Service Level Agreements, therefore
independent funding may need to be found.
