Local ladies in training for Midnight Walk

A group of women from LadyZone slimmers club at Heald Green are pictured in training for the St Ann’s Hospice Midnight Walk through Manchester on May 25.

The stars too are coming out for charity Walk in aid of St Ann’s Hospice Go Yellow appeal.

Top players from Manchester City Football Club, TV celebrities and sporting personalities are backing the walk, and already scores of supporters are lining up to join in. A big thank you to the Yorkshire Bank for becoming our event sponsor.

The 10k night time trek across the city is destined to become one of Manchester’s most spectacular and unusual fundraising events of 2007.

With more than 1,000 walkers stepping out at midnight on Friday May 25, the walk will begin and end at the City of Manchester Stadium – home of Manchester City FC. They will follow a route just over six miles along Ashton New Road, Great Ancoats Sreet, Deansgate and back via Albert Square and Market Street.

Greater Manchester Police will be providing motorcycle escorts for the walkers and Manchester City Council is fully backing the event.

Among the celebrities supporting the walk are Granada news presenter Lucy Meacock, North West TV presenter and comedian Dave Spikey, Coronation Street stars Tupele Dorgu and Nikki Sanderson, world gymnastics champion Beth Tweddle and Paralympics athlete Sarah Bailey.

Chief Executive of St Ann’s Hospice, Terry McDonnell, said: “We have organised some memorable events in the past, but it is unlikely there will have ever been anything quite as spectacular as the Manchester Midnight Walk. We would like as many people as possible to take part and experience it - while helping to raise money through sponsorship for those living with life-threatening illnesses in Greater Manchester. It will be a sight not to be missed.”

For a £12 registration fee, each entrant will receive a ‘goodie bag’, a Manchester Midnight Walk yellow T-shirt and a special medal presented on completing the walk. Volunteers acting as marshals and helpers on the night can also be sponsored.

Song writer raises funds for St Ann’s Hospice

Singer songwriter Linda Conneely from Marple is raising funds for St Ann’s with a song written in tribute to her late husband David, a day care patient who succumbed to Motor Neuron Disease in June last year.

Linda wrote her love song ‘I Will’ recalling the occasion when David, 46, proposed marriage to her on a hilltop near Mellor in June 1999. It inspired her to write an album of songs for her CD she entitled ‘I Will’.

“David often praised St Ann’s Hospice and the vital role that they played in providing much needed palliative care,” said Linda.

Linda will be performing songs from the album to launch her CD at a concert at Marple United Reform Church this Friday, April 20 in aid of
St Ann’s and The Mind Association.

End of an era for Eccles Support Group

It’s the end of an area after more than 22 years of fantastic fundraising by Eccles Support Group, who have raised over £87,000 for St Ann’s Hospice.

For the stalwart fundraisers - chaired by founder member Mary Menarry, now in her 90s – have decided to wind up their group because of the increasing age and frailty of its committee.

Treasurer Edna Matthews said: “We have loved working with St Ann’s and our supporters have got a lot of satisfaction out of raising funds for the Hospice.”

The group presented their final cheque in aid of St Ann’s for £1,560 after raising funds from a sponsored knit and coffee mornings.

However support for St Ann’s from the people of Eccles will continue with the opening of a new St Ann’s charity shop at nearby Monton, and a long established coffee morning every Friday at 10am at Winton Library will still take place in aid of the Hospice.

Anyone wishing to continue the tradition of support for St Ann’s Hospice in the Eccles area can phone Mrs Matthews on 0161 789 8726 or St Ann’s Community Fundraiser Margaret Beck on 0161 702 8181.
