If you have ever fancied owning your own race horse without all the hassle or the costs, now is your chance. A winning horse from the stables of a leading race horse owner will go to the highest bidder in a charity auction in aid of St Ann’s Hospice.
The race horse will be the unique auction prize at Mere Golf Club Captain’s Rugby Sporting Dinner near Knutsford on Friday May 2. Race horse owner and club captain Alan Baxter, a long time supporter of the Hospice, is donating the racing certainty for a whole year.
“There is already a reserve bid of £5,000 for the horse, and it will be ideal for either an individual or a syndicate to bid for,” said Alan, at his racing yard in Leek. The winning bidder will experience all the excitement of being a racehorse owner and will receive all owners prizemoney won during the year of ownership.
St Ann’s Fundraising Officer, Sarah Clifford, said: “Having a race horse as the top auction prize will be a unique opportunity for sporting fans.”
The sporting dinner, sponsored by George Davies Solicitors LLP in Manchester, as well as associate sponsors Sellick Partnership Recruitment Specialists and O2, will be an opportunity to brush shoulders with a host of rugby legends including Sale Sharks’ Charlie Hodgson, Steve Hanley, Jason White, and Mark Cueto. England international and former Wasps prop forward Jeff Probyn, will be the guest speaker.

Pub quiz regulars at the award winning Arden Arms pub in Stockport have helped raise more than £2,000 towards free care for patients with life-threatening illnesses at St Ann’s Hospice at Heald Green.
Pub licensees Joe Quinn (left) and Steve King are pictured handing over the cash to Hospice Fundraising Officer Louise Kelly. “Our regulars turn out every Tuesday evening for our pub quiz, and instead of a cash prize, we donate the proceeding to St Ann’s,” said Joe.
Their support for St Ann’s dates back to the time when their former barman, Graham Hallworth, was cared for in his final days at the Hospice. “This is our way of saying thanks to St Ann’s,” said Steve, whose pub is listed in the AA Good Food Guide and was runner up in the Campaign for Real Ale’s national pub of the year awards.
Louise said: “Such wonderful support from the likes of Joe and Steve at the Arden Arms is vital in raising £16,000 a day as a charity to provide free care for our patients.”
Employees from Virgin Media’s call centre in Wythenshawe have raised an impressive £1,000 to help provide free treatment for patients with life-threatening illnesses at St Ann’s Hospice at Heald Green.
They raised the money among their 500 staff in a matter of weeks by holding bring and buy sales at the call centre, a sale of home made cakes and a jumble sale. Jen Mather, one of the driving forces behind their fundraising team, said: “We wanted to give back to our local community and St. Ann's is well known in the area for its excellence and caring.”
Gatley Rotary Club have donated £1,350 to help provide free care for patients with life-threatening illnesses at St Ann’s Hospice in Heald Green. They raised the money with a series of collections and fundraising events.
George Lea, President of Gatley Rotary Club said: “We feel it is important to support St Ann’s Hospice because of the excellent care it provides to members of our local community”.
Hospice Fundraising Officer, Louise Kelly, said: “We are delighted that Gatley Rotary Club have been fundraising on our behalf, and we really do appreciate all their hard work and support”.
Students from Manchester Metropolitan University are staging a fun show at the Comedy Store in Whitworth Street, Manchester on Sunday, March 9 in aid of St Ann’s Hospice. Fundraiser Louise Kelly of St Ann’s said: “We are delighted that the students have chosen to support our patients and we hope this will encourage more young people to do the same”.
