Infection Control Conference: ‘At the coal face’ – Monday September 24, 2007, 9.30am to 4pm

Location: St Ann’s Hospice, Peel Lane, Little Hulton, Worsley, Manchester, M28 OFE

This conference looks at how clinical staff delivering palliative care can reduce the risk of patients acquiring Healthcare Associated Infection (HCAI) without compromising overall holistic care. It is aimed at all health professionals involved in palliative care.

Golfers pitch up £20,000 for Hospice

Bramall Park Golf Club captain’s charity match raised more than £20,000 to help provide free care for patients at St Ann’s Hospice. More than 200 golfers competed in the match organised by Captain Tony Bowden and events officer Andy Cotter.

Pictured with Tony and Andy are Lady Vice Captain June Clark, events organising committee member Bob Hobson and Dermot Rainsford of Barclays, which donated £1,220 towards the fundraising.

Mr Cotter said:” St Ann’s is our local charity and we are pleased to do all we can to help them with the essential service they provide for the community.”

St Ann’s Chief Executive Terry McDonell said: “ We are extremely grateful to the Captain and the members of Bramall Park Golf Club for their huge contribution and all hard work in making this event such a tremendous success.”

Manchester pupils win Young Citizen
of the Year awards

Pupils from schools all over Greater Manchester were among the winners of this year’s Young Citizen of the Year Awards staged by St Ann’s Hospice to encourage community spirit in young people and fundraising for the Hospice.

This year more than £20,000 was raised by pupils from 25 schools that competed for the awards, which were sponsored by Cheshire Building Society. Key 103 radio presenter Chelsea Norris hosted the event at Manchester Conference Centre and among those presenting awards were Robert Hough, Chairman of Cheshire Building Society and MEP for the North West Region, Arlene McCarthy.

The winners were:

• Cheshire Building Society Most Outstanding Individual Award winner Stephen Schilizzi, aged 16 of William Hulme’s Grammar School said: "I have been involved in Young Citizen of the Year for the past two years, and enjoy the fundraising activities and visiting the Hospice to chat to the patients.”

• Best Secondary School was Walkden High School, where pupils raised funds through a series of events ranging from selling Christmas and Easter novelties, setting up a cake stall, packing supermarket bags at Morrisons, and organising a chocolate fountain. Musicians from their String Group also entertained our daycare patients.

• King David Junior School, in Cheetham Hill were awarded Best Junior School. Pupils spent every break and lunchtime over three weeks fundraising by washing cars, selling toys, holding a jumble sale, and joining in a series of fund raising games.

• Cheshire Building Society Most Committed Award winner was Cheadle Hulme School where pupils showed great dedication by selling St Ann’s novelties, packing bags at Sainsbury’s and organising a disco for Year Seven pupils.

• Funnel Creative Most Innovative Fundraising Award went to students from Bridgewater School for their ‘Last Rolo’ fundraising initiative which saw the whole School get in to the romantic spirit!


St Ann’s Hospice Fundraiser Wendy Bray said: “These schools have been totally committed to volunteering and raising awareness of our Hospice. They are great examples of young citizens.”

Walkden High School music teacher Kimberly Graham said: “St Ann’s has always been a very special place for our School. I have been so proud of our pupils this year. As part of their work for the Young Citizen of the Year Awards, they have been totally dedicated. They are always quick to volunteer and fundraise, and have done all they can to show themselves to be brilliant young citizens.”
