St Ann’s Hospice honours volunteer Jessie for 40 years of dedication

Jessie Fox, 80, who lives in Withington was honoured at a special awards ceremony at St Ann’s Hospice in Heald Green on 3 February 2010 after clocking up an impressive 40 years of service to the hospice as a volunteer.

Presenting Jessie with her award, Terry McDonnell, Chief Executive at St Ann’s Hospice, said: “We rely on the incredible generosity of people like Jessie and all of our volunteers who give up their time to support the hospice in so many different ways. I would like to say a huge thank you to her for working tirelessly for St Ann’s for a fantastic 40 years.”

Jessie, who usually works one day a week for St Ann’s Hospice, was presented with her award by Terry, hospice chair Jean Jones and the Deputy Mayor of Stockport. She is currently recovering from a broken hip but would normally take two buses from her Withington home to the hospice in Heald Green each week.

Jessie was one of the original volunteers who helped to fundraise to establish a hospice for Manchester when she was first approached by the Bishop of Manchester 40 years ago. 2011 sees St Ann’s Hospice mark 40 years of caring for local people with life limiting illnesses.

Some 700 local people volunteer to help St Ann’s Hospice and carry out a wide range of different roles from working as fundraisers, as patient drivers, gardeners or volunteering in the hospice’s local charity shops. St Ann’s Hospice is currently seeking volunteers in fundraising administration and events, drivers to collect daycare patients and for volunteers to work in its 12 charity shops. Please get in touch if you have a few hours a week to spare.
