This issue sees us recapping the end of 2003 and looking forward to the New Year. In 2004 we will be celebrating another milestone with the 25th Anniversary of our Little Hulton site, which opened in 1979. After an official launch on the 9th April, there will be various events running throughout the year to commemorate the Anniversary and we have interviewed some of the staff who have been at the site since it opened as well as showcasing a number of our archived photographs. In this edition, we will also be taking a look at forthcoming events, such as Will Week and other dates for your diary for the first half of the year. We also received a great deal of feedback from the Friends survey held last July, thank you to everyone who responded. Over the course of the year, we will gradually be introducing some of your ideas into the newsletter You will also find a home collection box along with this issue showing the different ways that you can help St Anns and with handy telephone numbers listed for your convenience. Use it in the home or at work to collect any spare change that you might have every penny counts! Our income and expenditure is carefully monitored to ensure that Friends is presented in the most cost effective way possible and we are now also offering a text-only version for those who will find it easier to read in this format. We can also send a version by email, which saves on postage for St Anns and means that more funds are available to contribute directly to patient care. As always, we would love to hear from you with your news, views and comments. To send in your comments, or request a text-only/email version, simply fill out the attached form and post to us. Thank you to everyone for your continued support which enables us to be looking forward to the silver anniversary of Lttle Hulton we couldnt do it without you! Here is wishing all of our readers a safe and prosperous 2004. Kind regards, Terry McDonnell Chief Executive If you no longer wish to receive Friends, please call Pauline Hodkinson on 0161 498 4631 to be removed from our mailing list. Little Hulton 25th Anniversary 2004 marks the 25th Anniversary of the opening of St Anns Hospice Little Hulton site in 1979. This will be celebrated in style over the forthcoming year with our supporters, volunteers and local community, following an official launch on the 9th April. We take this opportunity to invite you along to the open day on the 9th April from 11.00am onwards to have a tour of the site and see just what has changed over the years. This special date marks the reception of the first ever patients to the site in 1979. Over the past 25 years, our site at Little Hulton has developed immensely from its beginnings in 1979. The site started with 30 Inpatient beds and now also has two family rooms where family can stay with the patient. The Day Therapy Centre opened in 1992 as a result of a 1million appeal and is open five days a week, with Day Care available on three days from 10am 3pm, providing supportive Outpatient and Medical Palliative Care Clinics. In 1998 a large conservatory was added to the Day Therapy Centre and 2003 saw a further development to this area with the completion of the Renaissance project. With the aid of a grant, volunteers transformed the conservatory, which was badly in need of refurbishing. The flooring, blinds and furniture were all completely replaced and the conservatory is now one of the major meeting places at Little Hulton for patients, visitors and staff. Another addition to the site since its opening has been the Childrens conservatory. This was opened in 2002, providing a welcoming environment for children and is another example of how staff at St Anns Hospice continually strive to improve our services, not only to patients, but also families and carers. St Anns wins national award for quality service St Anns Hospice has won a prestigious UK Charity Award for Best Practice, which recognises St Anns key achievements in providing a quality service for patients and their carers. St Anns Hospice Head of Clinical Governance, Jan Codling, says she was delighted and proud to accept the award on behalf of the Hospice. This Best Practice Award relates to the core business of the organisation, that is the care of patients and their families, said Jan. It is only through the commitment of the staff and volunteers at St Anns that this award is possible, as everyone in the organisation has an impact on the care we provide. It was a case of third time lucky for St Anns. In 2001 the Hospice made the finals for a revised salary structure that improved financial planning. Last year the Hospices volunteer scheme made the final shortlist for recognising the vital role of volunteers. Commendations for care by Hospice supporter Jayne Bessant, Director of Clinical Services and Sue Taylor, Inpatient Services Manager accept the award from presenter Maria Eagle MP, Minister for Disabled People and Philip Gafga, Chair of the Judging Panel for the 2003 awards) Staff were delighted to learn that St Anns Hospice had been nominated as one of the finalists in the Deafblind UK Awards. Nominated by Bernice Rodwell, who was a very close friend of an Inpatient, St Anns Hospice was awarded a special commendation in the category of Best Healthcare Provider. The patient had been cared for in many institutions over a number of years and his original wish was that he would not end his days in one. However, he felt safe and happy to stay at the Hospice and his close friend wanted to express her thanks to St Anns for this and also for making people feel protected at a difficult time of their lives. The National Deafblind Friendly Awards are designed to highlight examples of good practice where professionals and businesses have gone that extra mile to make medical facilities, social services and the High Street more accessible to deaf and blind people. Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire In 2003, a survey was carried out amongst Daycare and Inpatients to obtain feedback relating to satisfaction with services they received whilst at St Anns. The feedback was extremely positive and a credit to the staff within the organisation. Here are some of the comments made by the respondents : Coming to Day Care has helped me see there is a light at the end of the tunnel and it has changed my life for the better Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff, they will always hold my grateful thanks The Hospice currently has by word of mouth excellent services and would Im certain come tops of any organisation in my opinion Tree of lights On 14th December the Hospice annual Tree of Lights services took place. This event has gone from strength to strength and this year around 2000 people attended the services. A far cry from the first service held 7 years ago which took place in the car park at Heald Green. The event is now held at Manchester Cathedral and two services are necessary in order to accommodate all those wishing to attend. Carols and prayers are accompanied by the lighting of the tree of lights by the Bishop. The sharing of lighted candles within the congregation serves as a reminder to all present of those who cannot be there. This years congregation, which has been the biggest yet, shows that support continues to grow for the event and preparations for next year have already begun! Christmas Concert A fantastic evening was enjoyed by all at the celebratory Christmas carol concert in aid of St Anns Hospice at The Bridgewater Hall on Monday 15th December. BBC presenter Martin Henfield introduced the event and joined the choir after the concert to sing carols in the foyer whilst Sue Nicholls (Coronation Streets Audrey Roberts) was there to lend a festive hand and draw our annual car raffle, a Honda Civic Sport, won by June Shotton from Sale. For a full list of the winning tickets, please ring Caroline Siddall on 0161 498 3630. Will Week St Anns Hospice Will Week Campaign is running again this year from the 15-19th March and is a chance for supporters of the Hospice to provide security and peace of mind for yourselves and loved ones by making or changing your Will. The St Anns Will Week has been successfully running for a number of years now and has been developed between St Anns and local solicitors, who will be providing a free standard will-making service in return for a donation to the Hospice. This year, our Will Week is sponsored by United Co-op Group. So why make a will? A properly executed Will ensures that your loved ones are provided for, instead of your assets going elsewhere or to the State. Your requests will be carried out, making arrangements easier on your family and friends at an already difficult time. Whether you are moving house, having a baby, becoming grandparents or getting married, changes in your life mean that you should regularly review your arrangements to ensure that they are up to date. St Anns speaks to solicitor Michael Jackson of William H. Lill & Co. in Altrincham for his advice. It is extremely important to make sure that your Will is up to date. Too many people either dont make a Will or dont get round to updating it, which can make it a very difficult process for their families and loved ones to go through. Making your own Will can have drawbacks in terms of legality its much easier and safer to enlist the help of a professional and Will Week gives us the chance to help people whilst also helping St Anns. For a list of participating solicitors or more information, please contact Fiona Reed on 0161 498 3664.
