Respite Teams

"The Respite Co-ordinator came and explained to us what she could offer and she was very clear about what they could do. She didn't dismiss Dad, she treated him as a person which I thought was wonderful. We could have kissed her. The thought that someone would come and take that burden and responsibility away. Not that Dad was a burden, but it was difficult."
Jacqueline Tourney speaks of the care given to her Father, Jack Strange, by the Respite Home Care Team

The Respite Teams have been developed to reduce the stresses and strains placed on personal and professional carers at this difficult time, by offering practical support, nursing care and nursing/medical advice.

Although hospital or hospice admission is sometimes unavoidable, input from the Respite Teams means that people have the choice of staying in the comfort of their own home, or being discharged home from hospital/hospice, where that is their or their carers expressed wish.

The Respite Teams consist of qualified nurses and experienced auxiliary nurses who are trained to give specialist nursing care within peoples' own homes. They complement and supplement the care provided by the District Nurses, Macmillan Nurses, Marie Curie Nurses and other Community Services with the full knowledge of your family doctor.

They provide care to any person with palliative care needs who live in Salford or Trafford and wish for the care to be provided in their own home.

Some patients and their carers may require an assessment visit in order to identify their needs. This will normally be carried out by the team leader but may occasionally be carried out by the co-ordinator or one of the respite nurses and will be followed up by a letter outlying the care to be provided. After care has been provided for 8 weeks then the needs of the patient and their carer will be reassessed.

There is no limit to the number of visits a patient can receive and all care is provided at no cost to the family.
