An insight into the life of Ian “Spider” Mellor
Supporter event: An insight into the career of one of Sale’s sporting heroes Ian Mellor will be shared at Sale Sports Club on Clarendon Crescent on Friday, October 18, from 7.00 pm.
Ian played for his boyhood idols Manchester City in the 1970s against legends like George Best, Bobby Moore, Billy Bremner, Sir Geoff Hurst and Kevin Keegan.
The Mellor family have a rare claim to fame – Ian’s son Neil followed in his dad’s footsteps by playing at the top level for Liverpool.
Neil and other family members will be there to share stories about Ian, who died of a rare disease in May, aged 74.
Known as Spider due to his lanky legs, Ian was so embarrassed by his physique that he skipped lessons to avoid playing for his school team in front of spectators.
Ian’s autobiography Spider was published days before he died in St Ann’s Hospice. The book costs £10 and all proceeds are donated to the charity which is building a new hospice adjoining its current Heald Green site.
The Mellor family are hoping to raise enough funds to have a bedroom named in Ian’s memory.
