Meet Sheila our Everyday Hero

I'm a mum and everyday I support grieving families

My name is Sheila Unwin (Alam), and my son was cared for at St Ann’s Hospice. Every day I support families who are on the same heart-breaking journey.

I have regularly given to St Ann’s since Amjid passed away five years ago. Kindness costs absolutely nothing and my son received good care and kindness in abundance here at St Ann’s Hospice. This is my happy place.

I find that people feel that hospices are not happy places, but they are. When somebody is in here, although they are more than likely going to pass away, the treatment and the kindness make it a happy place.

Even the kitchen staff were incredible. My son never ate sweet things, he was real body toned and looked after himself but because of the treatment he was receiving, he got an insatiable hunger for eating sweet things. One of the ladies in the kitchen, Meira, went home and baked him a tray of brownies during her time off and brought them into his room so he could have them for his guests.

You just don’t forget kindness like that. It meant the world to him.

That’s over five years ago now but it doesn’t matter how long it's been, the grief still lingers. Amjid passed away on September 1st, 2019. He died very, very young at the age of 35. He was a family man, a good, caring man. St Ann’s means everything to me to remember him.  Sheila Unwin (Alam), Everyday Hero

I would encourage you, if you can afford to, to regularly give to St Ann’s Hospice for the continuation of their amazing care. We don’t know what’s around the corner. I never would have thought my lad would have been in here at 35 years of age, but it was St Ann’s that helped him on his journey. I just hope he is the best angel that God could have.
