Olivia’s story

Olivia Hibbert and her family are supporting the 2024 Light up a Life appeal, after her dad was cared for by St Ann's.

We’re supporting St Ann’s Hospice’s year’s Light up a Life appeal this year. It’s is a special time of year when we can celebrate loved ones who may no longer be with us and reflect on their lives.

My family has grown very close to St Ann’s Hospice after they cared for my dad Simon last year.

My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2021 that metastized to his bones. Last year he was admitted to St Ann’s Hospice for pain management. Originally he was staying in the hospice for a few weeks, but Dad stayed in St Ann’s for 12 weeks and passed away there, aged 52.

I’d always thought of a hospice as a place where you go to die, as that’s what they are often portrayed to be. After my family and I visited St Ann’s, we knew straight away that this wasn’t the case at all, it’s a lovely place to be.

Until you have an experience with a hospice you don’t understand how important they are.

St Ann’s cared for all of my family too, they truly became a support network for us. When a member of your family is dying, you don’t know what you’re going to do. But St Ann’s made us understand that this feeling is normal, and were so lovely with all of us. Olivia Hibbert

We owe a lot to the hospice as a family, we weren’t treated like visitors, we became a member of the hospice which was so special at the time – and we’re still connected today.

The Light up a Life appeal directly helps families like mine, and by joining the appeal you can make a difference.

St Ann’s Hospice is able to provide invaluable care to patients like my dad and their families because of the generosity of supporters. A donation will ensure those needing the help of the hospice will receive the best support, just like we did.
