Tom’s story

Tom is a student and volunteer on the inpatient unit and found that he has improved his skills through volunteering with St Ann's.

Student, Tom, started volunteering at St Ann’s in January 2018 on the inpatient unit at our Heald Green hospice.

He is currently studying Biology at the University of Manchester and is interested in a job in healthcare so thought it would be beneficial to get some experience at a hospice alongside his degree.

I really enjoy chatting with the patients and I do other jobs such as clearing the wards and offering drinks, including the alcoholic drinks trolley which always goes down well with patients!
From speaking with my house-mates, hospices can still be seen as a taboo topic and they often think it’s ‘all doom and gloom’ but I don’t think it should be seen like that as I’ve found that everyone is so warm and friendly at St Ann’s.
I’d really recommend volunteering here, not only do I enjoy helping people, it’s also really helped me improve my communication skills too.
