Jean’s story

Jean volunteers with us in a number of different roles across the hospice.

How did you get into volunteering?

I worked here at St Ann’s Hospice in the finance office for 17 years, when I retired I thought it would be a good idea to come back as a volunteer! I started helping out in the coffee shop and gradually I have started doing more – helping in the fundraising office, at events and on reception.

Tell us about what you do in your volunteer role.

I help in the fundraising office every Wednesday afternoon, I do a variety of things including work on the fundraising database, writing thank you cards, putting together fundraising packs and general admin bits and bobs around the office. I still help out in the coffee shop and on reception too!

What do you enjoy about volunteering?

It’s the atmosphere – being around people. I feel like I’m doing something worthwhile in my spare time now I’m retired. I’ve also seen for many years what the hospice does. I know how the hospice is a much-needed facility within the local community, and volunteers play a big part in that.

What would you say to anyone who is thinking about volunteering for the fundraising team?

Just do it! Nothing is too hard, nothing is asked of you that is beyond your limitations. But you do get given the confidence to try something new and get involved. It’s also a fun and friendly place!
