Take on the Tour de Manc with us this May

Damian Lacey is an Advanced Clinical Practitioner at our hospice and is taking part in his second Tour de Manc this May.

Damian says: “I did the Tour De Manc last year and absolutely loved it. It was so much fun, the views were brilliant but I am hoping for more sunshine this year!

“I commute to work most days, cycling 20km there and back so I’m always telling people to get on their bike and cycle around.

“I’m hoping to get a group together from St Ann’s Hospice to complete the Tour de Manc with me, it’s great that all levels of ability can take part and I encourage everyone to come along and give it a go.”

Prices start from £30.00 depending on your chosen route but whichever you chose, you get £5 off Tour De Manc prices when you sign up with St Ann’s.

With you discounted place, we ask that you aim to raise a minimum of £150 in sponsorship for us.

Tour de Manc allows you to take in the sights of Greater Manchester and enjoy the fantastic, welcoming atmosphere at this proper Manc cycling sportive, all while fundraising for our patients.

There is a variety of distances to suit riders of all abilities. There are four routes you can choose from: Northern Quarter (32 miles), Manc Challenge (75 miles), Classic Full Manc (108 miles) or the Mad Manc (126 miles).

“From the moment you arrive on the day there is a real build-up of excitement as you take your bike and meet everyone else doing the challenge. There are brilliant staging areas with music and energy that gets you ready to ride!

“I’m hoping for more sunshine this year, particularly at the finish line. I was going to take on the Manc Challenge but in a moment of madness I’ve signed up for the Classic Full Manc so it really will be a challenge!”

To sign up and get on your bike to raise money for St Ann’s Hospice, you can register at www.sah.org.uk/tdm.

If you have any questions about the event please contact our Events Team at events@sah.org.uk or call us on 0161 498 3631.

Made in Manchester Awards choose St Ann’s Hospice as charity partner for the night

Nick Shepherd, future-pro Chair, announced that the money raised throughout the night from the raffle would be going towards St Ann’s Hospice’s Build It Together campaign.

An amazing £5795.99 was raised on the night, which will all go towards building a new hospice in Heald Green that is vital for the patients and loved ones at St Ann’s Hospice.

I was honoured to select our charity partner which came naturally to me following a personal experience I had with St Ann’s Hospice back in 2018. This time six years ago, my auntie was diagnosed with an incredibly rare cancer where she had no hope of survival from the beginning. St Ann’s Hospice provided both respite and end-of-life care for her in the last six weeks of her life where they showed her love, compassion and dignity until the end.

Nick Shepherd, future-pro Chair

“The current hospice site in Heald Green is an unfit for purpose building, however one that they manage to do incredible things in which is improved by the inspirational people who work there. They turned what should have been a dark time in my families lives to something which I look back on as happy memories.

“This story represents thousands of individuals in hospices across the UK right now and to those of you who may have had experience with hospices before will know what a haven they really are.

“However, you probably have no idea how little funding they really get, only receiving 1/3 of funding from the NHS and needing to raise an additional £20,000 every day to keep the doors open.

Nick attended the Spade in the Ground event at St Ann’s Hospice last year which commemorated the start of the building works that this project has been working towards.

Liz Greenwood, Capital Partnerships Fundraiser at St Ann’s Hospice, says: “I had a wonderful evening at the Made in Manchester Awards celebrating everyone who was nominated and recognising the work they’ve done.

It was lovely to see so much support being given to St Ann’s as we work together to raise £2 million for the hospice we are in such desperate need for. Thanks to Nick and Pro-
Manchester for all the support you’ve given us, we’re so grateful to have you as a friend of St Ann’s.

£5,100 raised by Offerton Methodist Choir

We are Offerton Methodist Choir; an amateur choir who perform concerts throughout the year to raise funds for charity. Each year we adopt a local charity and in 2023 we chose to support St Ann’s Hospice.

Nic Wooding, a member of the choir

“St Ann’s was very close to the choir’s hearts as the hospice had cared for one of our own members – a very dear friend – whom we sadly lost last year.

“We love what we do; we sing from our hearts and enjoy making people smile.”

Offerton Methodist Choir came to our Heald Green site for a cheque presentation earlier this month, so that we could thank the choir for raising a brilliant £5,100.

This money is going towards our Build It Together campaign, which is raising the final £2 million we need to build a new hospice next door to our current building in Heald Green which is 150 years old.

Ready, set, go! Dedicated supporter takes on a race each month this year

From 10k races to marathons on Sue’s list for the year, she’s embarking on a very busy running schedule!

Sue says: “My mum spent the last two weeks of her life at St Ann’s Hospice in Heald Green as she had a brain tumour, she died when she was 58 years old. It took me a long time to go back into the hospice, but when I did go back it was to buy some Christmas cards.

“I realised what a lovely place the hospice is, not what you’d think a hospice is at all. After I started to visit, I thought it would be nice to volunteer which I’ve now been doing for 15 years.

I’m now a volunteer and ambassador for St Ann’s, as well as embarking on fundraising for this amazing place. I haven’t done any fundraising for a while so I wanted to take on something big which I’m definitely doing now!

Sue Mee

Sue is dedicating herself to taking part in a race a month this year to test her limits and bring together friends and family in supporting her.

She has already run the Tatton 10k this month and is running the Hale 10k in February and the Wilmslow Half Marathon in March.

Other notable races Sue is taking part in are the Manchester Marathon, Might Stride Kiltwalk in Glasgow and Palma Half Marathon in Majorca.

Sue says: “I’ve been running three times a week and my rest days include yoga, I’ll be following a plan all year to prepare for each race. My friends kept asking me to run the Manchester marathon, and I’d booked a few races in for the start of the year so I thought I may as well do one race each month!

“I’m so glad to be doing a variety of races around the country and further afield, it will be great to be together with my friends who are joining me for races and who have already supported me.

“I’m aiming to raise £2,000 by the end of the year to support St Ann’s who are so close to my heart. The hospice has been part of my life for 28 years and I would like it to be there for a very long time to come.

“That’s why I’m fundraising for the Build It Together appeal which is building the new hospice in Heald Green to continue providing vital care for patients, loved ones and our community.”

We are so fortunate to have amazing volunteers like Sue who are so dedicated to our hospice, they are such an important part of each day at St Ann’s. Sue is going above and beyond with her fundraising this year and we can’t wait to support her at the races she’s taking part in.

New year, new you?

A man carrying a table out of the furniture van

Are you determined to get on top of your life admin in 2024? Now that the festivities are over, is January the time to start ticking off some of those tasks on the to-do list and get sorted for the new year? Here at St Ann’s, we are here to help. We have various opportunities and resources below to make your life a little easier.

Recycle your Christmas tree

Not sure what to do with your tree now that Christmas is over?

We have partnered with the charity JustHelping, who will collect and recycle your Christmas tree in return for a welcome donation to the Hospice.

Register your tree for collection via the JustHelping website, and our volunteers will pick up your tree between 11th and 14th January 2024.

Free furniture collection

Out with the old, in with the new… If you have furniture you’d like to donate to our charity shops, we can provide a free collection service, so you have one less problem to think about!

All details relating to donations and the collection form can be found here.

Clothing donations

New year, new wardrobe? If the new year has spurred you on to have a clear out and you’re wondering what to do with your unwanted clothes, we’d welcome your donations at one of our many charity shops in and around the Manchester area.

Visit our ‘Donating Goods‘ page for further details.

Payroll giving

Have you been thinking about setting up a regular charitable donation? Did you know Payroll giving is a tax-efficient scheme that allows employees to give more for less? You can set up regular donations to our hospice through your payroll before tax.

Payroll giving is simple to set up, tax-efficient, and provides businesses with the chance to improve their social responsibility; all while providing the hospice with reliable and consistent donations, allowing us to better plan ahead to provide care to our patients.

Check if your company offers payroll giving or tell them about it and encourage them to sign up.

Our guide to payroll giving can be found here.

Free Will-writing service

Getting around to writing a Will is something that can stay on the to-do list for a long time, but it is so important for everyone to make one. This March is Will Month, so it is the perfect time to get sorted. Local solicitors will be waiving their Will-writing fees when you donate to St Ann’s. Details of how you can book an appointment during Will Month can be found here.

A Christmas Concert for our New Hospice

St Ann’s Hospice Festival Choir was delighted to welcome everyone to their Christmas Concert earlier this month, where they continued to raise funds for our Build it Together new hospice appeal.

Stockport Town Hall hosted their annual ‘Christmas is Coming’ Concert. With a mixture of traditional, contemporary and Christmas songs, there was something for all the family to enjoy.

In attendance were the Mayor and Mayoress of Stockport, as well as VIPs from the hospice and many of their local supporters.

Greenbank Preparatory School Chamber Choir sang with the choir too, bringing lots of Christmas cheer and joy to those listening. The town hall ballroom was dressed for Christmas with bunting, tinsel and Christmas trees.

Rosemary Murray, a member of the St Ann’s Hospice Festival Choir, says: “In the last 30 years of these events, over £790,000 has been donated to St Ann’s Hospice through our choir’s continued fundraising efforts.

It is so important to us that we raise money to support St Ann’s Hospice’s Build It Together campaign, which is raising the final £2 million the hospice needs for its new building to transform their end-of-life care and safeguard it for future generations.

Rosemary Murray, St Ann’s Hospice Festival Choir Member

“Our choir consists of over 80 choristers from the Greater Manchester area. Our members are so generous in their dedication to the choir and the hospice. We are grateful to be able to come together to sing uplifting and joyous music, whilst raising funds for such a great cause.”

During the concert John Pomphrey, Founder and Music Director of the Festival Choir, presented a cheque to Emma Dixon, Director of Clinical Services, for over £12,600 from the choir’s fundraising activities for the new hospice over the last year.

Rosemary said: “With Christmas jumpers to the fore and mulled wine available, the audience joined in with Christmas carols. It was a great way to get into the spirit of Christmas and support St Ann’s Hospice!”

“The hospice doesn’t close at Christmas”

Our Christmas appeal raises vital funds to support the patients and families that need us on Christmas Day.

Tia is a Staff Nurse in the Inpatient Unit at our Heald Green hospice. She has put herself forward to work on Christmas Day this year.

“I worked the late shift on Christmas Day in my first year at St Ann’s. The hospice doesn’t close at Christmas – our patients and their loved ones still need us, so we come to work and carry out our duties like any other day.”

Fundraising is essential to the running of the hospice. Without your support we would not be able to keep our doors open, as only around one third of their income comes from the NHS.

Your donation, no matter how big or small, is invaluable to St Ann’s and the families that Tia will care for this Christmas.

It’s not just about the patients but about making it special for their families and visitors coming into the hospice on Christmas Day. It could be their last Christmas together – we want to do everything we can to ensure they have special moments and make lasting memories together.

Tia, Staff Nurse

Just £20 could help to stock the drinks trolley so that patients and families could enjoy a hot drink or festive tipple together this Christmas Day. £30 could pay for a counselling session for someone who has been bereaved and struggling with their first Christmas since losing their loved one.

This Christmas, please donate anything you can to help St Ann’s. It would mean so much to the patients and families who rely on us and would be lost without us this Christmas.

Your donation makes a difference. To donate today please call St Ann’s Hospice on 0161 498 3631 or click here.

Salford Red Devils visit St Ann’s Hospice to spread Christmas cheer

Last week, our patients and staff at our Little Hulton hospice were visited by the Salford Red Devils who came to spread Christmas cheer and joy.

Mark Sneyd and two new signings Cade Cust and Joe Shorrocks were serving mulled wine and mince pies to everyone at our site.

The three players took the time to talk to our patients and staff and their warmth, friendliness and kindness really meant a lot to everyone who met them.

We are calling for support this festive season through our Christmas appeal, with all donations making a difference, no matter how big or small.

Just £20 could help to stock the drinks trolley so that our patients and families could enjoy a hot drink or festive tipple together this Christmas Day. £30 could pay for a counselling session for someone who has been bereaved and struggling with their first Christmas since losing their loved one.

Heather Bennett, In-Memory and Legacy Fundraiser, says: “The relationship between St Ann’s Hospice and Salford Red Devils is so important in highlighting what community support really means.

We are so grateful to Salford Red Devils for continuing to think of us and being there for us, helping raising awareness of what we do. We are looking forward to watching this relationship continue to grow.

Heather Bennett, In-Memory & Legacy Fundraiser

The hospice was visited by some of the team last year, who served a special Christmas dinner to our staff to celebrate the hard work they do all year round.

Our St Ann’s Hospice ‘takeover day’ last season was a huge success and the perfect way to recognise the incredible services the charity provides.

Paul King, Managing Director of Salford Red Devils

“I know Christmas is a busy period for the staff, so hopefully the mince pies and mulled wine were a welcome boost.

“As always, it was great to see our players in attendance and I encourage anyone to help with their ongoing Christmas appeal!”

For more information on how you can support us this Christmas, please see our Christmas appeal here.
