Streaming for charity

Jade, who works as fundraising and communications assistant at St Ann’s, raised £244 from her venture.

Jade began her stream at 9 am, raffling off prizes donated mostly by gaming companies during her global video game marathon.

The stream was a great experience and helped spread the name of St Ann’s Hospice across the world.

Conventional means of fundraising will always be popular, but we’re trying to come up with new, exciting and more inventive ways of getting people on board with fundraising.

That means pushing digital and streaming to the younger generations who are mostly focused on using social media platforms such as Tik Tok.

There are more charity streams coming online and it’s not the first time someone has done such a thing for St Ann’s. The key is to target people you know and new viewers as well.  Research and timing for certain video games is also important.

Jade Choudhury, Fundraising and communications assistant

Huge thanks to Jade for taking on this brilliant 24-hour challenge to raise money for our patients.
It’s been really hard fundraising during the pandemic, as many of our events and other activities in the community have had to be cancelled or changed due to restrictions. So we’re only able to carry on providing our care thanks to people like Jade who think of new ways to fundraise for St Ann’s. It make such a difference to everyone here at the hospice.

The Manchester Midnight Walk is back for 2022!

For fifteen years, generous Mancunians have been gathering together to see their city in the moonlight whilst raising money for St Ann’s, with funds generated by sponsorship totalling more than £2million.  But, for the last two years we’ve been forced to cancel the event due to covid restrictions, with a virtual-only event taking place instead.

The 10km sponsored walk, which will set off from Manchester Cathedral at midnight on the evening of Friday 20th May, passes many of the city’s landmarks, with entertainment on route ensuring participants have a fun-packed evening while raising money for our hospice.

I’m so excited that the Manchester Midnight Walk can be back in the city centre where it belongs again this year.  It’s such an important event in our annual calendar and we’ve had supporters saying how much they’ve missed it during the pandemic.
It’s a way for people to gather together and celebrate this amazing city, and there is always such a fantastic atmosphere on the night.  Some people take part in honour of a loved one, while others simply join us for a fun evening raising money for a local cause.  We’d love as many people as possible to join us and help us really celebrate the return of the Manchester Midnight Walk in style.

Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive of St Ann’s

Walkers can take part on their own, or in a group and will also be welcomed into Manchester Cathedral for a pre-midnight party, complete with entertainment, dancing, DJ and live music.

There’s also an opportunity to reflect on the lives of loved ones with special memory lanterns which can be lit at the Cathedral before the Walk.

This year’s event is sponsored by Betfred, who have supported St Ann’s for many years.

As a charity, our teams have been working extremely hard throughout the pandemic to ensure local people have been able to access specialist palliative and end of life care when they’ve needed it most.

Fundraising has been challenging, with many events like the Midnight Walk cancelled or adapted, so we’re hugely grateful to local people who have been thinking of us and helping us raise money to keep our services running.

We need to fundraise around £20,000 a day to do that, so every penny raised at events like the Manchester Midnight Walk really does make a difference to the lives of local people.  Please do sign up if you can – we’d love to see you there.

Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive of St Ann’s

For those unable to attend on 20th May, there’s also the opportunity to take part in the Manchester Virtual Walk, a challenge which offers participants the chance to choose their own date in May to complete a 10km walk.

The virtual walk can be done at any time and place supporters wish, with some choosing to walk 1km a day for ten days, some 10km in one go, or others 10km a day for a set period of time.  The challenge can be fully flexible and tailored to fit the individual’s own preferences, location and pace.

Participants will receive a free fundraising pack and yellow t-shirt to don during their walk, and will also be sent an exclusive medal on completion.

Take advantage of the launch release tickets at a very special offer!

Register for only £16 per adult and just £11 for 11-18 year olds. This offer is only running for a limited time, so don’t delay sign up now!

Signs ups can be made by clicking on the button or by calling 0161 498 3631, or emailing events@sah.org.uk

Make your Will for free this March

St Ann’s Will Month enables people to make a Will or update an existing one with help and advice from a solicitor. The solicitors who take part all give their time for free; instead of charging their usual fee they invite people to make a donation to the hospice.

Supporters can do so all year around, but we hope our Will Month in March will help to highlight the importance of preparing a Will and raise awareness with local people.

Nearly a third of our costs to provide our care to patients and their loved ones is covered by the kind donations we receive from gifts people leave to us in their Will.  It’s incredibly humbling to know people have thought of us in such a way, and we are always really proud to ensure their legacy is a lasting one as they help people who need support from the hospice. We’re hoping our Will Month will highlight the importance of getting your affairs in order, and also how simple it is for most people to actually make their Will.  People taking part don’t need to be leaving a gift to St Ann’s, and we are incredibly grateful to the local solicitors who are supporting us by getting involved.

Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive of St Ann’s

Once we decided to go ahead making our Will it was a perfect opportunity for us to help St Ann’s by taking part in their Will Month. We were given a list of solicitors to choose from and the whole process was easy. We would highly recommend taking part

Ruth Dawson, Complementary Therapist at St Ann’s Hospice

St Ann’s Hospice’s Will Month will run throughout March. To take part in Will Month, or for more information about how a gift in your will can help people with life limiting illnesses, please call the hospice on 0161 498 3631, email legacies@sah.org.uk or visit www.sah.org.uk/willmonth

Join our corporate challenge!

Our ‘Move, Eat, Play, Give’ challenge gives businesses a flexible, bespoke way to show their support of the hospice.

Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive of the hospice, said: “Our corporate challenge will take place throughout March, and it’s been developed so that teams from businesses in the area can choose activities which best suit them.

“Not only will you be making an impact at St Ann’s, it’s also an opportunity to bring your team together to make a positive difference. In a world where more and more of us are embracing remote working, and some teams only connecting over the internet, projects or activities which unite a workforce are incredibly important.”

We know that the last few years have been difficult for corporates, as it has been for the hospice too, but we’re hoping that this will be a great opportunity for us all to come together and do something positive and uplifting for local patients and their families – it will hopefully be a helpful way to boost team morale too.

Rachel McMillan, St Ann’s Chief Executive

The ‘Move, Eat, Play, Give’ challenge offers businesses the ability to choose activities from any of the four categories, tailoring activity to suit their own circumstances, needs and resources. Whether that’s a physical challenge to walk three miles a day – the equivalent of the distance that a hospice nurse walks in an average shift on the wards, holding a virtual quiz night, or collecting clothes to donate to one of our shops, there are a huge variety of ways that teams can choose to join in.

Businesses will have the whole month of March to take part, and the business or employee that raises the most money will also receive a prize.

Bridging finance lender, SDKA, took part in the challenge last year and raised over £9,000 taking on different personal challenges from fasting, losing weight, exercising and even standing upside down.

SDKA is a local business and supporting a local charity makes it close to our hearts. Personally, I have known someone who received care at St Ann’s. For that person and their family, the hospice made such a massive difference and I think more people need to be aware of what a fantastic job the charity is doing.

Nisha Mehta, Marketing Manager at SDKA

Rachel McMillan added: “As a charity, we need to fundraise £20,000 a day to keep our services running and we’d be hugely grateful to any business who chooses to take part in this challenge for St Ann’s.

“We hope that by enabling organisations to choose their own itinerary and ways to support us, it will mean that they can take advantage of the flexibility, whilst also helping us to continue caring for people in their local community. Huge thanks in advance to anyone considering getting involved.”

We’re also asking any business who might be able to consider St Ann’s as its charity of the year for 2022 to get in touch on 0161 498 3631.

100km in February 2022

100km in February’ is a virtual fundraising challenge for St Ann’s. Join hundreds of incredible St Ann’s Hospice supporters, from where ever you are, in taking on 100km in the month of February.

The start of a new year is a great time to plan your goals for the year ahead. We all know how good exercise is for our physical and mental health, so we’ve got the perfect challenge for 2022 to help meet those exercise goals.

Participants can complete their kilometres however they like – run, walk, cycle or swim, or a combination of all four! The important thing is to get out and get moving to raise funds.

There will be lots of support for participants along the way and we have a dedicated Facebook group where you can meet other amazing fundraisers, and get loads of tips and ideas. The group is a fun space, where you’ll get support from your fellow challengers to keep you motivated in the run up to and during the February challenge.

There is no registration fee and every penny you raise will make a difference. Well even send you a free t-shirt for you to wear with pride throughout the challenge! We would love as many people as possible to join in and raise what you can to support the patients and families we care for.

Rachel McMillan, St Ann’s Chief Executive

As a charity, our doctors, nurses other healthcare and support staff have only been able to continue caring for patients on the front line throughout this pandemic, thanks to the generous support of the community, so we’re hugely grateful to anyone who is able to join us and take part this year.

So many of our events and activities have had to be cancelled over the last two years, and it would mean so much if people could pledge to get outside, have some exercise, and raise much needed funds so we can continue to provide specialist palliative and end of life care to those who need it. We even have people taking part who will do the distance with laps of their garden.

It’s a really challenging time for all of us, but hopefully people will embrace the challenge whilst staying safe and keeping within government rules and guidelines. Thank you in advance to anyone who does sign up to take part. I can’t thank you enough, and it really will make a huge difference during an extremely difficult time.

Rachel McMillan, St Ann’s Chief Executive

Participants will receive a free t-shirt to don during their challenge.

Record total for Christmas light display

Residents of Warwick Drive, Hazel Grove, raised £13,000 for St Ann’s from their Christmas light extravaganza in memory of neighbour Christian Boswell.

The 39-year-old father-of-two died of cancer last March and his family had already raised £10,000 for St Ann’s where he was in his final days.

That fundraising support was more than doubled as visitors from near and far generously donated as they toured illuminated homes.

Organiser Tim Lyons has written to fellow neighbours to thank them for once again supporting the traditional display.

The street was full of light and colour and it was probably the best display we’ve had in the 20-odd years we’ve been putting on the display.

New neighbours even put some of the residents who’ve lived here a while into the shade with their amazing lights.

Visitors were also able to scan a QR code outside my house which made donating much easier.

Tim Lyons

Retired music teacher Steve Hallworth, who lives nearby, was a big draw with his entertaining one-man musical show.

Christian’s daughter Darcie, 6, had earlier raised £3,300 in sponsorship from a 32-mile walk as part of the family’s initial fundraising.

You can still donate to the MuchLoved page here: www.christianboswell.muchloved.com

We are so grateful to Andrea, Tim and the whole street for getting involved. What a kind and creative way of supporting the hospice this festive season in honour of Christian. It means so much to us when the local community raise money for St Ann’s in memory of someone they love. We really couldn’t carry on caring for our patients without you, so thank you so much.

Family take part in Advent challenge

It was an invitation Zain (10), Sofia (9) and Zara (7) could not turn down, each running at least a mile a day over Advent.

Their challenge raised funds for St Ann’s where Martin died of stomach cancer last August, just two months after his illness was diagnosed. The retired college principal, who grew up in Urmston, was 67.

Daughter Christine, from Cheadle,  inherited a love of running from her father and also ran the equivalent of two marathons during December.

Dad began playing the ukelele after he retired and travelled to Hawaii. So the day the kids went into St Ann’s to say their goodbyes they wore bright Hawaiian shirts, sang songs and played the ukelele.

Staff had wheeled his bed out into the garden and were really helpful, making a huge effort and  allowing us to have those final moments together.

Dad had spent a lot of time in hospital and couldn’t eat or drink. Understandably, visiting was extremely restricted and his time was limited, so going to the hospice for his last week meant we spent as much time with him as possible in a different environment.  We felt comfortable and really well supported.

Christine Clinton

We are so grateful to Christine, Zain, Sofia and Zara for running virtual marathons and raising money for the hospice. It means so much to us when the local community support St Ann’s in memory of someone they love. We really couldn’t carry on caring for our patients without you, so thank you so much.

Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive of St Ann’s Hospice

The marathons were not the only tribute from the family.

A year ago the children also undertook a running challenge after their grandma Shahnaz Ahmed died from a stroke.

Has this has inspired you to take on your own fundraising challenge?

Last chance to register your Christmas tree for recycling collection

We’re working with national charity JustHelping to organise Christmas tree collections in local areas, which will raise money for charities including St Ann’s. The collections have been run by community volunteers, sponsors and donors for more than nine years.

Don’t miss out on your chance to get your tree collected easily this January. Registrations for the tree collections close on Sunday 9th January 2022, and trees will be collected by volunteers between 13th and 16th January.

The collections will not only help take away the headache of disposing of Christmas trees once the festivities are over, but will also raise money for local people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

The 2021 Christmas tree collection raised over £50,000 for the patients and families St Ann’s Hospice supports.

Trees can be registered until Sunday 9th January at www.charityxmastreecollection.com along with a voluntary donation. The real Christmas trees are shredded into chippings and recycled to be used locally in parks and sports clubs.

Fiona Cosgrove from JustHelping said: “It’s really exciting that we’ve been able to raise such a huge amount of money for charities like St Ann’s in previous years, and we’re hoping we can do even better this time around.

“It’s fantastic that we’re able to bring people together to raise money for such fabulous causes, and of course, the fact that the trees we collect are recycled is also good for the environment – not to mention that it takes away the headache of disposing of the tree from local people too.”

The tree collections will be taking place in the postcode areas SK1, SK2, SK3, SK4, SK5, SK6, SK7, SK8 and M20, M21, M22, M23, M27, M28, M30, M32, M33, M41, M44, WA14 and WA15. Those wishing to have their tree collected can sign up online.

We’re proud to be one of the oldest and largest hospices in the UK, and the fact that we’re still here after half a century and still able to support local patients is down to the amazing support of our local communities. We were blown away to receive £50,000 in our 50th year from the 2021 tree collections, which shows the amazing impact of community spirit.

We’re hugely thankful to JustHelping, the army of volunteers who support them, and everyone who makes a donation, and would encourage anyone that lives in one of the eligible postcodes to sign up. Everyone who makes a donation really does enable us to keep our doors open and allows us to continue to provide specialist care to those who need it most. Thank you.

Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive of St Ann’s
