Annual golf day in memory of Anthony Lowthian

Family and friends have raised more than £13,000 in that time for St Ann’s where Anthony, from Sale, died on Christmas Day in 2004.

Anthony was diagnosed with motor neurone disease four years earlier and regularly received respite care at the Heald Green hospice during his illness.

Brothers Phil and Chris organise the golf day, held at Ashton-on-Mersey Golf Club for the last few years around his birthday, September 8.

Anthony, an IT director, also has two sisters Julie and Elizabeth, and a youngest brother Daniel.

Anthony loved the hospice and the care he got there. He went in at his own request a few days before he died when his condition deteriorated.

MND is an awful degenerative illness , but St Ann’s opened Anthony’s eyes to help him focus on quality of living and introduced him to alternative therapies.

He wanted to go into the hospice for Christmas and we often wonder whether he knew he was dying and wanted to take a burden away from our family. He had a dignified death and received the best care and comfort at St Ann’s.

You don’t want to lose your brother at 41, but our golf reunions keep the happy memories of Anthony alive. As kids we played cricket at Sale Moor and he played football for Old Smithillians.

Phil Lowthian, Brother of Anthony

We are so grateful to Phil and Chris for organising the golf days in honour of Anthony and raising so much money for the hospice over the years. It means so much to us when the local community support St Ann’s in memory of someone they love. We really couldn’t carry on caring for our patients without you, so thank you so much.

Save the hassle and mess and recycle your Christmas tree

We’re encouraging people to take advantage of a special Christmas tree recycling service this year.

National charity, JustHelping, is organising Christmas tree collections in local areas to raise money for charities including St Ann’s. The collections have been run by community volunteers, sponsors and donors for more than nine years.

The 2021 Christmas tree collection raised over £50,000 for the patients and families we support.

Trees will be collected by volunteers between 13th and 16th January, and trees can be registered at www.charityxmastreecollection.com along with a voluntary donation. The real Christmas trees are shredded into chippings and recycled to be used locally in parks and sports clubs.

The tree collections will be taking place in the postcode areas SK1, SK2, SK3, SK4, SK5, SK6, SK7, SK8 and M20, M21, M22, M23, M27, M28, M30, M32, M33, M41, M44.

It’s really exciting that we’ve been able to raise such a huge amount of money for charities like St Ann’s in previous years, and we’re hoping we can do even better this time around.

It’s fantastic that we’re able to bring people together to raise money for such fabulous causes, and of course, the fact that the trees we collect are recycled is also good for the environment – not to mention that it takes away the headache of disposing of the tree from local people too.

Fiona Cosgrove, JustHelping

We’re proud to be one of the oldest and largest hospices in the UK, and the fact that we’re still here after half a century and still able to support local patients is down to the amazing support of our local communities. We were blown away to receive £50,000 in our 50th year from the 2021 tree collections, which shows the amazing impact of community spirit.

We’re hugely thankful to JustHelping, the army of volunteers who support them, and everyone who makes a donation, and would encourage anyone that lives in one of the eligible postcodes to sign up. Everyone who makes a donation really does enable us to keep our doors open and allows us to continue to provide specialist care to those who need it most. Thank you

Christmas Lights of Hazel Grove

The Boswell family are facing their first Christmas without father-of-two Christian who died of cancer in March, aged 39.

The family have already raised more than £10,000 for St Ann’s where Christian, an aircraft engineer, spent his final days.

That figure will hopefully go up when neighbours in Warwick Drive, Hazel Grove, switch on their Christmas lights from December 5.

Their lights are so spectacular they attract visitors from near and far and this year’s street display has added poignancy following Christian’s loss.

Wife Andrea, daughter Darcie (6) and son Alfie (3) intend to put up their lights as usual, as do Christian’s parents Debbie and Graham who live across the road.

This won’t be a good Christmas for us after losing Christian, who was ill for two years and wanted us to raise money for St Ann’s to thank them for the wonderful care they gave him.

We asked for donations in lieu of flowers at his funeral and the hospice has been amazed by how much we’ve raised. Darcie raised £3,300 alone in sponsorship from a 32-mile walk.

We’ll have our lights up again. There’s a very good community spirit here and that’s been shown by the way friends and neighbours have supported our family.

Andrea Boswell, Wife of Christian Boswell

Neighbour Tim Lyons is preparing to decorate his house again. The retired police officer said: “We’re hoping the entire street will once again join in and think it’s appropriate that this year’s display is in aid of St Ann’s.

“We’ve supported several charities in the past and I’ll be out with my collection bucket again, meeting and greeting people and explaining where the money is going.”

We are so grateful to Andrea, Tim and the whole street for getting involved. What a kind and creative way of supporting the hospice this festive season in honour of Christian. It means so much to us when the local community raise money for St Ann’s in memory of someone they love. We really couldn’t carry on caring for our patients without you, so thank you so much.

Turning birthday celebrations into a fundraiser

John Bilsborough’s links with St Ann’s go back to 1987 when his late father Jack was cared for at our hospice in Little Hulton.

When John reached 70, he and wife Carolyn threw a party at Buile Hill Park Hall, asking friends and family to make a charitable donation instead of buying presents, a gesture which raised £800.

The funds were split between St Ann’s, where Carolyn is a volunteer, and the MND Association, as one of John’s relatives died recently of motor neurone disease.

The Bilsboroughs, from Salford, have been supporting St Ann’s for almost 30 years through various events, including bike rides and hospice fairs.

They have been regulars at our Manchester Midnight Walk, with Carolyn raising £150 after joining this year’s virtual version.

Carolyn has been unable to help on the ward at the Little Hulton hospice for the last 18 months because of the pandemic.

When you reach your 70s, you don’t really have anything to ask for and thought the party was a good way for people to contribute. It was a lovely party and so nice to get together with people we hadn’t seen for a long time.

John Bilsborough

Something that impresses me about the hospice is the high level of personal care and how everyone does their best for patients and families. Even something like the meals and special touches like the drinks trolley. It makes it very homely and personal.
We’ve also held many car boot sales over the years to raise money for St Ann’s, selling both our own items and those donated by friends and family.

Join us at our Light up a Life Services

Over the last twenty five years, thousands of people have taken part in the Light up a Life Appeal for St Ann’s. Many more people have joined the appeal again this year, either by dedicating a light on one of the hospice trees, or dedicating a light online in our Winter Forest which can include a photo and message to a loved one.

Hundreds of people have already booked to attend our services of celebration in the coming weeks. The services, which will be held both in person and online, are completely free to attend. Outdoor services will be held at our sites in Heald Green on December 9th and Little Hulton on December 6th. People will also come together in December at St Peter’s Church in Hale and at Manchester Cathedral.

During the services, the lights will be turned on in honour of those being remembered, and family members will share their stories of the support they received from St Ann’s. The congregation will also join together in remembrance through songs, poems and times of reflection.

Over the past 18 months we’ve found it incredibly important at the hospice to pause and acknowledge our experiences – lifting our heads up, taking time out to reflect and looking back on special moments, memories and the people we’ve cared for.
That’s one of the reasons why I love our Light up a Life Appeal, especially the services. It’s a way for us to come together as a community in Manchester and beyond and recognise all that we’ve been through, the people and things close to our hearts we’ve lost and the memories which we’ll treasure.
Thanks to the amazing support of our community and the generous donations they have made with their dedications, we’re able to continue supporting patients and their loved ones when they need us most.

Sports-mad supporter runs for St Ann’s

Even one lap of a running track used to be a struggle for Thomas, 19, who ran 5k in the Sale Sizzler at Wythenshawe Park.

He was joined by mum Lucinda, brother Daniel and sister Isabelle, with dad David cheering them on. Thomas raised an amazing £721 for St Ann’s.

Thomas may now switch his sights to a 10k event next year.

The race was a huge achievement for Thomas who pretty much hated running and couldn’t go far without stopping. I think he’s now found his inner runner and really likes it.
He’s always been very fit and enjoyed any exercise involving the gym, as well as swimming, tennis and football, but during lockdown all those things stopped because he was shielding.
His life had become very small and he was stuck in the house, so it was good to get out again and do something. The rest of us run and it’s something Thomas can now do with his family.
As consultants at Salford Royal Hospital, we have patients who go to St Ann’s for end-of-life care and medics who train there, so I’ve been aware of the hospice for a long time, but had never been for a visit until we presented the cheque.

Lucinda New, Thomas’s Mum

Huge thanks to Thomas and his family for taking on this brilliant challenge to raise money for the hospice. We’re so grateful.
The support of our local community is so important and helps us raise the £20,000 we need each day to keep providing our services. We can’t thank Thomas enough and everyone who organises a run, bucket collection or event in their community to raise money for the hospice.

Get in the festive spirit at our Winter Fairs

This year’s Winter Fairs will help you prepare for Christmas in style, whilst raising valuable funds for local hospice patients.

Everyone is welcome at the events, which promise to be a real feast of family fun, with mince pies, mulled wine, gift stalls, tombolas, festive entertainment and of course a visit from Santa too.

Previously the fairs took place at our hospice sites in Little Hulton and Heald Green, but to keep patients safe we have made the decision to hold the Winter fairs at new locations this year.

On Sunday 21st November the fair will be at Rose Walker Community Centre in Cheadle Heath and on Sunday 28th November the fair will be at Walkden Legion in Walkden. Both will take place from 12 noon to 3pm and it is just £1 entry for adults, with accompanied children free.

Coming along to one of our Winter fairs is the perfect way to kick off the festive season and they are incredibly popular with local families. Of course, as well as being a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon, the fairs also help us to raise valuable funds to support our patients and their families. As Christmas approaches, we really want to make the time as special as possible for everyone we care for, and the money raised at events like these helps us to make a huge difference to their lives. They also offer people the opportunity to donate unwanted items, such as unopened gifts, bottles and chocolates that will help us to raise money to help our patients. It can be difficult to throw away an unwanted gift when you know someone has put time and effort into choosing it, and donating items like this to a local charity is a guilt free solution. We can find a new home for unopened toys, gift sets, chocolates and bottles and so on, so people can have a pre-Christmas de-clutter knowing that they are also supporting those with life-limiting illnesses and their families.

Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive of St Ann’s Hopsice

Donations can be dropped off at the hospice’s sites in Meadowsweet Lane (off Peel Lane) in Little Hulton and St Ann’s Road North in Heald Green.

Support St Ann’s this festive season

Darcie’s sponsored walk

Walking a few hours each day, Darcie and her family did the school run 40 times over a week, an amazing 32-mile challenge which raised £3,275 for St Ann’s where Darcie’s dad was a patient.

Darcie’s dad, Christian Boswell, was supported at our hospice in Heald Green where he died earlier this year in March 2021.

Christian’s family set up a tribute page in his memory, where friends and family can make donations, write messages and share photos and memories.

Darcie’s sponsored walk brings the total that the family have raised for us to over £8,900, and they hope to reach £10,000 soon.

Our family and friends were keen to donate towards Christians’ funeral, but we decided as a family that we would prefer the money to be donated to St Ann’s Hospice to help other patients and families who were going through a similar experience to what we had been through.
We recently held a beautiful afternoon tea garden party and Darcie completed a 32-mile sponsored walk to raise money for St Ann’s. The weather was awful on the first few days, but Darcie still wanted to walk so we did!
The tribute page has made it easy for people to donate and has spurred us on to think of new ideas to raise money. It has brought not just us as a family together but also the local community.
Christian was very generous and donated regularly to various charities so we know he will have approved of his page and be so proud of the amount raised.

Victoria Boswell, Christian’s sister

We’re hugely grateful to Darcie and her family for taking on this brilliant challenge – what an inspirational way to spend the school holidays.
We can’t thank Darcie and her family enough, and everyone who has made a donation to Christian’s tribute page. As a charity, we rely on the kind support of people in our local community to continue providing our specialist care to patients and their loved ones. Every penny really does make a difference to someone’s life.

Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive of St Ann’s
