Football Fundraising for St Ann’s

Manchester has seen plenty of charity football matches featuring ex-City and United players – but never a game of Tottenham old boys!

That will change when Spurs legends turn out at Cheadle Town FC on Sunday 27th June, kick off 11am, in aid of St Ann’s.

Proceeds will also be shared with the Justin Edinburgh 3 Foundation, a charity set up in memory of the former Tottenham player who died two years ago, aged 49.

The match is organised by Emma and Patrick Nottage, from Audenshaw, who set up the North West Spurs Official Supporters Club which boasts 730 members.

The couple met when die-hard Spurs fan Patrick, originally from north London, accidentally sent a text message to a wrong number belonging to Emma, starting a romance that stipulated it must involve his favourite football team.

Tottenham are Patrick’s first love. He eats, sleeps and breathes Spurs and when we met 18 years ago said I’d have to live with it and it’d be a roller-coaster. I had a soft spot for Liverpool back then, but he told me I’d need to follow a proper team. I’m now a hard-core Spurs fan and we go to most games but never speak during a match.

Emma Nottage, Organiser

Patrick, a delivery driver, is chairman of the supporters branch and Emma is secretary, a role that involved organising a coach to the Champions League final in Madrid in 2019.

The next big fixture is Tottenham’s clash with Manchester City on Sunday 25th April, in the final of the Carabao Cup at Wembley.

“We don’t get much grief from City or United fans, even though we’re in Manchester, and hopefully they’ll turn up at our charity game to support two worthy causes.

“We wanted to help St Ann’s because the hospice is local to Cheadle Town, Park Road, who kindly offered us use of their ground.

“We’re not sure yet which Spurs legends will be playing against our supporters club. It depends who’s available on the day, but the club have promised the club mascot Chirpy will also be there.”

Unsurprisingly, daughter Chloe (17) and sons Kyle (14) and Ollie (9) have all been brought up in the Tottenham tradition.

Tickets for the game on Sunday 27th June, are £7 for adults and kids free. Gates open at 10 am, with kick-off 11am. For more details, please email northwestspurs@gmail.com, or call Emma on 07401 383738.

Broadstone Mill Employees Walk for St Ann’s

Staff at Broadstone Mill Shopping Outlet within Broadstone Mill in Reddish – once the largest cotton spinning mill in the world – are holding a charity walk linked to the site’s history and heritage.

Claire Vincent, Marketing Manager at Broadstone Mill Shopping Outlet, said: “When it was a working mill the last leg of the cotton’s journey was along the Manchester Ship Canal.

“We’re walking as far as we can in March, with over a million steps walked in the first week of the challenge. We’re then working out how many times we’d have walked up the Ship Canal. The activity has brought staff together, even though most are furloughed.”

Over a century ago the building echoed to the sound of machines. From Monday, April 12, it will hopefully be the noise from ringing tills and chatting customers when the outlet finally reopens after being closed for much of the last year due to Covid-19.

Broadstone Mill Shopping Outlet, the department store with two floors of shopping and places to eat, has chosen our hospice as its charity of the year.

We can’t wait to open again. It’s been a long time and we’re looking forward to seeing regular and new customers too. We’ve done some refurbing in the store while we’ve had the opportunity so we can’t wait to show this off. It’s very exciting to be opening the doors! There are 17 of us doing the walking challenge to kick off our fundraising activities for St Ann’s. Apparently, a nurse or carer at the hospice walks an average of three miles a day, so that’s been our daily minimum target, although one staff member covered 54 miles in the first week. We’d recommend any other businesses to select St Ann’s as their chosen charity, especially as the hospice celebrates its 50th birthday this year.”

Local Solicitors support St Ann’s during Will Month

A Bramhall solicitor firm has pledged to support St Ann’s by offering a free Will writing service for people from across Greater Manchester.

Butcher and Barlow LLP in Bramhall is supporting St Ann’s during our Will Month campaign, for the second year, pledging to raise much-needed funds for our hospice, whilst helping local people to gain peace of mind from getting their affairs in order.

Matthew Watson, who is based at the firm’s Bramhall branch, along with colleagues Claire Jackson from their Leigh office, and Donna Crossthwaite from the Prestwich office will all be waiving their usual fees for preparing a simple Will or mirror Wills, and instead asking clients to make a donation to St Ann’s. They join a range of other solicitors from the area who have pledged their support for the popular campaign in aid of local patients.

I cannot stress enough the importance of making a Will – for peace of mind if nothing else. We hope that this initiative will be the perfect opportunity for people to think about getting their affairs in order, whilst benefitting a local charity that is invaluable to the community of Greater Manchester.

Matthew Watson, Wills and Probate specialist at Butcher and Barlow LLP

Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive of our hospice, said: “As a charity, we rely on the kind support of businesses and individuals from our local community and we’re so grateful to the team at Butcher and Barlow LLP for partnering with us for our Will Month again this year.

Around a third of our income every year comes thanks to the amazing generosity of people who remember us in their Will – it’s a truly lasting legacy that means we can continue to provide specialist care to local patients and their loved ones.

“People joining Butcher and Barlow LLP for this initiative don’t need to be previous supporters of St Ann’s, and they don’t need to be leaving a gift in their Will to us either.  If they do decide to do so that would be hugely appreciated, but, hopefully by taking part and writing or updating their Will they will get real peace of mind from getting their affairs in order and ensuring their loved ones know their wishes.”

Take on our Firewalk Challenge!

Blaze Firewalking Image

While lockdown may have us all use to a daily walk, we’re putting a hot new spin on perceptions of a stroll, by challenging people to sign up for a firewalk in aid of our patients.

Organisers from St Ann’s are asking brave ‘soles’ to sign up to take part in the sponsored event, which will see participants hot foot it over 20ft of wood embers, burning at 1236 degrees Fahrenheit – all to raise money to help patients with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

The firewalk event will take place on 24th April at our site in Little Hulton, and will be run in accordance with all government Covid-19 guidance, to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

Those brave enough to face their fears and walk the talk will be guided through the firewalk by experts Blaze, and will also have a motivational training session before the walk to help them leap into the challenge feet first.

Chief Executive, Rachel McMillan said: “This will be an amazing, once in a lifetime challenge for anyone who is brave enough to join us, and I can’t wait to see how everyone gets on. It’s a challenge for people of all fitness levels and is equally suitable for individuals, or teams from community groups or local businesses.

“The organisers at Blaze are experts, and those taking part will leave scorch free, and ready to take on anything.  Please do sign up if you’re able, as it’s set to be an exciting part of our 50th anniversary calendar of activity this year.”

By taking part in the Firewalk and raising £101.20 in sponsorship, people could provide a two-hour specialist rehabilitation session for a patient.

Rachel added: “As one of the oldest and largest hospices in the UK, we’re really proud to be celebrating our 50th birthday this year. The last twelve months have certainly not been an easy period in our history, as our nurses, doctors and other healthcare and support staff have worked hard on the front line to ensure local patients were still able to access the specialist care they needed throughout the pandemic.

“We’ve only been able to do that thanks to the support of people in our local community, so we really do appreciate anyone who takes the time to sign up to events like the firewalk or makes a donation. It makes a huge difference to the lives of the people we support.”

Manchester Virtual Walk 2021

Fundraisers from St Ann's prepare for the Manchester Virtual Walk

The Manchester Midnight Walk will have a virtual twist this year, as we respond creatively to the pandemic restrictions and adapt the event to ensure our biggest fundraiser of the year can continue.

The city is normally buzzing with excitement each year as more than a thousand participants take to the streets for the sponsored 10km walk in aid of our patients.

This year’s event was set to be bigger and better than ever before to mark our 50th anniversary on 17th May, but when lockdown and Covid-19 restrictions led to the cancellation of the physical event, we had to think creatively about how supporters can still raise funds

Rachel McMillan, St Ann’s Chief Executive, said: “It’s really disappointing that we can’t hold the Manchester Midnight Walk in the usual way this year – it’s been running for fourteen years, and walkers have raised a staggering £2million for the hospice in that time.

“But, the safety of our supporters is the most important thing to us, and our team have come up with a way that people from across the city can still join in and take part in our birthday edition of the walk, just with a virtual twist this year.”

We’re inviting you to sign up and take on the challenge to walk 10km over the hospice’s 50th birthday weekend from 14th to 17th May. You can choose to walk 10km in one go, or to split it into smaller chunks, and can decide to complete the distance whenever and wherever you wish.

Rachel added:

As a charity, our doctors, nurses other healthcare and support staff have only been able to continue caring for patients on the front line throughout this pandemic, thanks to the generous support of the community, so we’re hugely grateful to anyone who is able to join us and take part this year. So many of our events and activities have had to be cancelled in recent months, and it would mean so much if people could pledge to get outside, have some exercise, and raise a bit of money for our patients at the same time.  We even have people taking part who will do the distance with laps of their garden. It’s a really challenging time for all of us, but hopefully people will embrace the Manchester Virtual Walk and join us, whilst staying safe and keeping within government rules and guidelines.  Thank you in advance to anyone who does sign up to take part.  I can’t thank you enough, and it really will make a huge difference during an extremely difficult time.

Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive

Participants will receive a free fundraising pack and yellow t-shirt to don during their walk, and will also be sent an exclusive medal on completion.

Happy thoughts from supporter Dehrne

Dehrne Hancock Abseiling

The 50th anniversary of St Ann’s Hospice brings back lots of happy memories for Dehrne Hancock who even threw herself off Manchester Town Hall for the sake of the charity.

Her head for heights also saw an abseil down the CIS Tower, the Co-op headquarters in the city centre and at one time the tallest building in the country.

Such bravery was all in a day’s work for Dehrne in her role as the hospice’s corporate fundraiser, a post she took up after organising a charity fun weekend at Grove Park sports ground in Cheadle Hulme.

That was on behalf of Manchester Rugby Club and Cheadle Hulme Cricket Club, both of which her husband David captained.

The occasion, in May 1995, marked the 25th birthday of the clubs’ home. The couple have been proud members for 50 years.

That event was also used to launch a Silver Jubilee Appeal for St Ann’s to count down to its same anniversary at the Heald Green site the following year.

Dehrne did so well as organiser that William Stewart, Appeals Director at the hospice at the time, persuaded her to work for the charity soon after.

It wasn’t as terrifying as jumping off the town hall at my first fundraising event! The fun weekend was a joint effort and cemented a great friendship with the hospice, raising £7,000 for the two organisations.

Dehrne Hancock

The Bramhall grandmother recalled: “We had a fabulous weekend and although it took a lot of planning, it wasn’t as terrifying as jumping off the town hall at my first fundraising event!

“The fun weekend was a joint effort and cemented a great friendship with the hospice, raising £7,000 for the two organisations.

“I remember we had over 250 members at a quiz in a marquee on the cricket pitch on the Friday night before an Antiques road show the next morning.

“World renowned jazz musician Humphrey Lyttelton entertained a 450-strong audience at a black tie dinner the same night, while the next day we staged a celebrity cricket match between soap stars and United and City players.

“We used the marquee for a Sunday soul night and ended the Bank Holiday weekend with a family fun day.” said Dehrne.

Grand Ball Invitation

Highlights while working at St Ann’s included helping organise the BBC’s Songs of Praise, the first televised event from the newly-opened Bridgewater Hall in 1996.

Dehrne’s duties involved driving TV news presenter Martyn Lewis there in her Mini. She said: “We pulled up at the traffic lights near the hospice and a passer-by was amazed when they spotted who was in the car. Martyn was hosting the programme.”

Another abiding memory was helping organise ‘2,000 in 2000,’ a millennium choir concert at the Manchester Arena featuring 2,000 male voices.

Dehrne still supports the hospice and her team from Bramhall Golf Club have entered the next St Ann’s Golf Day at Dunham Forest Golf and Country Club.

Schoolboy takes on 50 laps for St Ann’s

Adam Collis - schoolboy fundraiser

Schoolboy Adam Collis copied his hero Captain Tom by pushing himself to the limit to help others.

Adam spent his half-term holiday cycling 50 laps of his local park raising funds for St Ann’s where his late grandmother was a patient.

The challenge in East Avenue Park, near his home in Heald Green, was a test of endurance for 11-year-old Adam, who has cerebral palsy and was once told he would never cycle.

Mum Sue said: “From day one medical experts said he’d never be able to ride a bike. We even went for an assessment two weeks ago and they couldn’t believe he could balance himself enough to ride without stabilisers.

“He’s quite determined and a couple of years ago said he wanted to ride a bike like everyone else. At first, I had to push him, then he took off and did it himself.

“He loved Captain Sir Tom Moore who was much like Adam in his determination to do something. He thinks that if someone that old could walk 100 lengths of his garden, then he can do this.”

Adam, who attends Etchells Primary School, has raised £1,000 for St Ann’s so far where Rita Gallagher, 73, spent six weeks before she died of cancer in August.

Sue said: “The care was amazing and it wasn’t just about my mum, but all of us. It was so personal and nurses worried about us, as well as mum. Unfortunately, Adam couldn’t visit his nana on the ward because of Covid so they met in the hospice gardens.

“Last year the focus was all on NHS and we got a leaflet from St Ann’s saying it was the 50th birthday, so Adam said he’d like to do something for nana and raise funds to help others.”

Adam said:

I love being on my bike which is my favourite thing, along with my scooter. I don’t play video games or anything like that because I prefer to be outside. The challenge was hard but I enjoyed it and want to thank everyone who has donated.

Adam Collis

Our Chief Executive, Rachel McMillan, said:

Huge thanks to Adam for taking on this amazing challenge, we’re so grateful for all of his hard work and support – what an inspirational way to spend the school holidays. The support of our local community is arguably more important than ever as we continue to provide services during the pandemic, so we can’t thank Adam and everyone who has made a donation enough. The money raised will help us provide specialist care to patients and their loved ones too.

Teresa’s 2021 kilometres during 2021

There was only one retirement present Teresa Sinclair wanted upon leaving the civil service after more than 43 years. That was a donation to St Ann’s Hospice to provide much-needed funds for the charity during our 50th anniversary year, especially during the pandemic.

It is also a big year for Teresa, from Gatley, who celebrates her 60th birthday on March 3, a month after leaving her administrative role with Border Force.

To mark her two special milestones she is walking and running 2021 kilometres during 2021 – her aim to raise £2,021 for the hospice. Teresa is already more than half way there, thanks to many generous donations from Border Force friends and colleagues across the UK.

Teresa said: “Rather than buy gifts, I asked colleagues to make donations which a lot did and a joint collection also raised £310.

“I’ve spent much of this last year working from home in these strange times, so when I actually left it felt very odd but my colleagues gave me the most wonderful virtual send off.

“I’ve lots of retirement plans, many of which I can’t fulfil at the moment. I’ll have more time for gardening which I’d like to learn more about. My husband John retired from Manchester University nearly two years ago so we plan to travel more when we’re able.

“I’d like to do some voluntary work and I will also have more time for my running and walking.”

Teresa, a member of Winston Runners of Wythenshawe, is keen to support St Ann’s.

My mum Cynthy spent some time in a hospice near our family home in Kent and I know what an amazing difference they can make to end-of-life care for patients and their families. My challenge celebrates the memory of the lovely family and friends I’ve loved and lost along the way. There are more of them than I’d wish and they’ve all enriched my life in different and immeasurable ways. I’ll never forget any of them.

Teresa Sinclair

Teresa joins many other local people who are raising money for St Ann’s in its 50th anniversary year. The hospice, which first opened its doors in 1971, has a huge range of activities planned for its birthday, despite the challenges the pandemic has brought.

Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive, said: “We’re one of the oldest and largest hospices in the UK, and are so, so proud of reaching this fantastic milestone. So much has changed since we first started caring for patients 50 years ago, but our ethos of making sure the patient and their loved ones are at the heart of everything we do remains the same.”

Another thing that hasn’t changed is that we’re only able to provide that specialist care thanks to the help of our local community, and people like Teresa are amazing in their generous support of our patients. This is true now more than ever, as our fundraising has been hit really hard due to the Covid pandemic. Our doctors and nurses and other teams are working so hard on the front line, and it’s amazing to see people really pulling together to raise money and help us celebrate our anniversary in style.

Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive at St Ann’s

“We’d love to hear from anyone who would like to get involved in supporting the hospice in this special year, and we’ve put together 50 ways people can take part on our website at www.sah.org.uk/birthday – there’s something for everyone on there, from large fundraising challenges, following and sharing our social media accounts, or joining our hospice lottery. Please do take a look, it would make a huge difference to the people we support.”
