Furniture shop launch new free Saturday collection service

In addition to weekday collections, our furniture shop in Ardwick is now offering free collections on Saturdays too, making the service more convenient for local people who are only available at the weekend.

Our free furniture collection service is extremely popular as it enables people to donate larger items such as quality used beds, sofas and white goods without having to try to get them to us themselves. We’re happy to help get donations into our vans too, so we really do take the hard work out of the process.

Every single item we receive helps us to continue to care for patients across Greater Manchester with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses and support their families. We’d be so grateful if local people replacing their sofa, bed, fridge, freezer or even washing machine would consider donating their old one to us.

St Ann’s launches Zero waste initiative

Currently eight products are available to buy waste free, including shampoo, conditioner, washing up liquid and multi surface cleaner. All of the products are environmentally friendly and safe to use around the home.

Customers can bring their own container and simply need to go to the fixture and fill it with the product they want. The container is then weighed by the store staff so the price can be calculated.

By its nature charity retail already contributes a great deal to helping people reduce their impact on the environment. With consumers now being more concerned about the issue of plastic waste than ever, we wanted to give them the opportunity to go waste free as well as dropping off a donation and maybe picking up a bargain when they visit us.

At the moment our zero waste fixture includes mainly liquid household products but it’s already proving to be very popular so the range may be extended. With our 14 charity shops including a vintage shop in Stockport selling specialist books and collectibles, furniture shops in Ardwick and Ladybarn and a bridal shop in Cheadle, we’re making it easier for people across Manchester and Stockport to live a more sustainable life while helping us to raise really valuable funds for St Ann’s.

St Ann’s team up with New Look

Following a successful pilot in the summer, New Look is launching a new customer discount initiative to support hospice care by encouraging more people to donate goods to their local hospice shops, and St Ann’s charity shop in Sale is one the shops taking part.

The high street store will be offering a 20 per cent discount voucher to anyone who drops in a full bag of donations at St Ann’s shop on School Road in Sale before January 13. The shop is one of over 200 taking part in the programme across the UK.

Under the scheme, running in partnership with national hospice and end of life care charity Hospice UK, donors will receive a voucher which they will be able to spend at New Look’s store in the Square Shopping Centre, Sale, which is only a short walk from the St Ann’s charity shop.

It’s wonderful working with New Look on this project. It helps people declutter and do something useful with their pre-loved clothes. Every item donated to us helps us to continue to care for people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, and we’re incredibly grateful for all the support we get from local people. This scheme lets them help us and get an even better deal from their local branch of New Look.

Amanda Brooks, Head of Trading Company at St Ann’s Hospice

As a company, we really care about being kind to our people and to our planet, therefore we want to make it easy for our customers to recycle their unwanted clothes whilst helping to reduce the amount of clothing waste that ends up in landfill. New Look is very excited about this partnership with Hospice UK to encourage our customers to donate their once loved clothes to their local hospice shop.

Nigel Oddy, Chief Executive Officer, New Look

Following the successful pilot for this initiative over the summer, we are delighted to be rolling this out nationally.

It is wonderful to have such as well-recognised brand as New Look working in partnership with us. Their support makes such a big difference in helping to increase public awareness about the care available to people with life-limiting conditions and their families.

Donation Drive Thru success!

Ryan Perkins Trading Company Assistant

One of the biggest risks and challenges within charity retail is donations. Unlike other high street retailers, we have very little control over what we sell in our shops as we never know what will come in through the doors and in what quantities.

It’s especially difficult when we have a number of specialist shops, which include two furniture shops, bridal shop, children’s shop and our vintage shop and its challenges such as this that make Charity retail such an exciting sector to be involved in.

The donation drive-thru idea, like all good ideas, came from a conversation over a cup of tea with a colleague. As much as I’d like to take the credit for it, it was them who suggested the idea. The idea being that we have a donation day at our warehouse so that people could drop off their bags of clothing, boxes of books and other items without running the gauntlet of parking in town centres.

We already offer a collection service to collect furniture and bags of donations from people’s homes but the reality is that nearly all our donated stock is brought into our shops by donors themselves and we are aware that shops with parking outside or nearby receive far more donations than those in town centre locations.

The first donation drive-thru day happened in June and it was a runaway success. We had 48 vehicles drop off over 180 bags and boxes of donations. We were overwhelmed by the positive response it received and how far some donors had travelled to be able to unload large amounts of donations.

To date, we have held five donation drive-thru days and the idea continues to develop. We have a team of five volunteers to unload vehicles so donors don’t need to leave their vehicles which also allows people with disabilities to donate items and support the hospice.

It’s just off the M60, so really convenient, and an easy solution for people who want to recycle or declutter, but aren’t able to head to a charity shop, park up, and carry lots of bulky items, bags or boxes.

We’re also able to Gift Aid donations meaning the donated items can raise an additional 25% for the hospice if the donor is a UK taxpayer.

It has also allowed us to begin sorting the items as they are donated so that shops can request specific stock they are short of, such as children’s clothes, ladies wear, electrical items etc. this allows us to free up staff and volunteer time in the shops to focus on serving our customers.

We also use the opportunity to sell a range of new goods and donated items on the day and promote our other services such as house clearances and our online shops.

The generosity of our supporters never fails to amaze me and to date, we have taken over 746 bags of clothing and also multi gyms, wardrobes, TV’s plus so much more.

The drive-thru days are now a monthly occurrence and it helps us guarantee stock whilst allowing us a degree of control over when we receive donations and how these are distributed through our network of shops.

The drive-thru donations days take place at St Ann’s Hospice Distribution Centre, Bankfield Industrial Estate, Unit A1, Coronation Street, Reddish, SK5 7SE. The next one is on Saturday 16th November and drivers can drop by any time between 10am and 3pm.

Have you got a passion for fashion?

Stockport residents with a passion for fashion are being invited to a very special local event to help them prepare for the Autumn/Winter season in style.

The special fashion show, organised by St Ann’s Hospice’s Romiley shop, will be held on Friday 15 November at Romiley Golf Club, starting at 7.30pm.

Packed with gift ideas, clothing inspiration, Body Shop stall, and a special pre-Christmas raffle, tickets for the evening of entertainment are just £6, including a glass of wine or soft drink.

The evening is the perfect opportunity to get ahead with the Christmas shopping, whilst also perhaps treating yourself to an item or two.  Not only can you grab a bargain, and see some fabulous clothing and other items on offer, but you can also feel good about every purchase as the money raised will help us to care for local hospice patients. Our shops have a great reputation in the area for people being able to find a fabulous mix of clothing and accessories, whether you prefer vintage, pre-loved or designer, and we’re excited to bring some of those fantastic finds to the fashion show in Romiley. We’d love as many local people as possible to come and join us on the night.

Hacienda memorabilia up for grabs in charity auction

Aficionados of Manchester’s rich musical heritage are set to battle it out to get their hands on a piece of Madchester memorabilia.

On Sunday 20th October an original cocktail menu poster hung near the bar in The Gay Traitor, the cocktail bar attached to the world-famous Hacienda night club, will be listed on eBay, with all proceeds raised going to St Ann’s Hospice.

The authenticated piece of Hacienda history is certain to appeal to collectors of Factory Records memorabilia. It was discovered by eagle-eyed volunteers in a box of items donated to St Ann’s.

This is an amazing chance for someone to win a real slice of Manchester’s musical history. The poster has been authenticated by a former graphic designer and event promoter connected to the Hacienda and we have been told it is most likely one of the reprints ordered by the club around 1986/87. It’s in very good condition as it’s been kept rolled up in a cardboard tube since it was removed from the bar. There are just a few light creases and some marks on the back that are probably from where it’s been stuck into a frame. We’re hoping for a lot of interest from music fans across Greater Manchester and beyond so that we can raise as much money as possible for St Ann’s Hospice from the sale.

John Neill, Online Sales Manager at St Ann’s Hospice

The poster is listed on eBay and the auction will run for seven days until Sunday 27th October. Bidding starts at £249.00. Click here to view the poster.
