Donate your unwanted Christmas gifts to St Ann’s

Jumper being sorted in Stockport charity shop

We’re asking people to consider donating any unwanted Christmas gifts this year to help people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

We’d love local people to drop off any new and unused bottles, gift sets, chocolates, or other unwanted presents to our hospice this January.

Eamonn O’Neal, Chief Executive of St Ann’s Hospice, explained:  “Everyone is guilty of putting one or two gifts that they receive over the festive season into a cupboard to gather dust for the rest of the year.  We’d love to help local people feel better about that, whilst putting the items to good use too.

“These kind of gifts are great for us to use in fundraising raffles, fairs and other events, and some items can also be sold in our hospice shops across Greater Manchester or online.  Every penny raised helps us to care for the thousands of local patients and their families we support each year so please do consider dropping off any unwanted or unloved items as we would really appreciate them.”

Donations can be dropped into the basket provided at our hospice sites in either St Ann’s Road North, Heald Green, or in Meadowsweet Lane (off Peel Lane), in Little Hulton, or can be taken to any of our fourteen charity shops.

We’re appealing for help from digitally-savvy volunteers

Jade and Trudi looking at the St Ann's ebay shop on a ipad

St Ann’s is appealing for local people who may be able to help us grow the income from our eBay and Amazon shops, by volunteering a few hours a week at our distribution centre on Bankfield Industrial Estate in South Reddish.

The volunteers will have the opportunity to help with everything from researching a wide variety of items from antiques to video games, marketing them for sale in our online outlets, photographing products and optimising listings.

Amanda Brooks, Trading Company Manager at St Ann’s, said:  “The hospice is a charity and we simply couldn’t continue caring for the thousands of local people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses we support without donations, including those raised by our online and offline shops.

“We’re really keen to hear from anyone who is digitally focussed who might be happy to donate a few hours of their time to support our busy team.

“This may be a role for someone looking to gain workplace experience in sales, marketing, online retail, business or stock management, and will be really varied. We’re a friendly, dynamic team – and we can promise that no two days will be the same!”

We care for people from across Greater Manchester from our three sites in Heald Green, Little Hulton and the Neil Cliffe Centre in Wythenshawe Hospital, as well as out in the community and in the places people call home.

Our Trading Company runs 14 shops, complete with a range of new and pre-loved items, as well as our online eBay and Amazon outlets, our Facebook Marketplace shop and our hospice lottery.

Amanda added:  “We have to raise £16,000 a day to ensure the hospice can keep its doors open for patients, and the Trading Company activity plays a really important part in helping us to achieve that.  The eBay shop income has increased by 400% in recent months, and we’re really excited to work with a local volunteer who might be able to help us grow this even further.  Every penny really does help us to care for local patients.”

A love of antiques has inspired Nikki Baker in her quest to help St Ann’s

Nikki Baker

Nikki is a valuer for auctioneer Adam Partridge, one of the country’s best known antiques experts after his appearances on TV shows including Flog It!, Bargain Hunt and Cash in the Attic.

Her instinctive ability to name a price for those long-forgotten possessions was inherited from dad Alistair, a keen collector as Nikki grew up.

Our 14 charity shops are stocked with items donated by the public and Nikki advises on the most profitable form of sale, with revenue funding patient care.

That could mean placing goods on the shelves, via our flourishing eBay site or auctioning them off as part of Adam’s monthly auctions in Macclesfield.

Nikki, from Woodford, passed an audition for the St Ann’s Hospice Festival Choir in 2010 and three years later left her job as a director with the NHS where she had worked for 26 years.

She said: “One part of my job was to support the contractual obligations the NHS has with organisations like St Ann’s Hospice which led me to further support through fundraising.

“I changed my career direction and had always liked auctions with a special interest in antiques, jewellery and furniture.

“I trained as a valuer and offer guidance by giving an estimate on what an item might receive at auction. Some go to auction and Adam is a keen supporter of charities and generously waives the normal seller’s premium to all charities.

“Initially, I also volunteered in the hospice coffee shop at Heald Green and am a relief manager in the charity shops.”

Nikki, a St Ann’s ambassador, has also organised numerous charity events for us, including an annual charity ball. Husband Peter has also raised funds by running the London marathon.

A seller who thought a jade figurine left to her by a great aunt might be worth about £15 fetched £5,000 at auction thanks to Nikki.

Our Trading Company Manager Amanda Brooks said: “Nikki has great expertise in the marketplace and we’re delighted to be able to call on her skills. We’d encourage anyone willing to donate items that may be of value to contact us.”

Light up a life

At our Light up a Life services, we take time to remember those that, for whatever reason, will not be with us this Christmas time. Many that come to our services may have a link with the hospice, and some may not.

People from all different faiths and background come together with one wish and that is to celebrate the lives of those we love.

Merry Christmas from everyone at St Ann’s!

We’re wishing you a very merry Christmas and a happy new year! Thank you to everyone who has supported us this year.

As we’re a charity, we need to raise £16,000 every day to keep the hospice doors open. We’re more than just a charity to our patients and every single penny donated makes a huge difference to their lives. Please go to www.sah.org.uk/donate-now to make a donation this Christmas, no matter how big or small.

Our talented charity shop manager can give your old furniture a makeover

Cath Goodwin

Bring in your old furniture and let Cath Goodwin’s artistic skills give it a new lease of life.

She has already upcycled tables, pictures and mirrors which customers donated to our Little Hulton charity where she is the manager.

Proceeds from sales go towards providing vital care for our patients and Cath’s request is for more unloved items so she can apply her creative talents.

Cath only discovered her artistic abilities after she had a stroke four years ago. She had been a lecturer in English Literature at Bolton University where she had once studied, gaining a first-class degree.

Cath explained: “I lost all my language skills when I had a stroke and couldn’t do the simplest crossword. Someone suggested I went to art class and I suddenly found that I was quite good at painting and discovered an alternative way to be creative.

“I strip, paint and varnish items applying decoupage paper to the surface to renovate the furniture. I do it all in my spare time at home and have sold quite a few items, raising money for St Ann’s.

“I’d ask anyone to get in touch with the shop if they have any small item of furniture that they want to donate and they’d be helping the hospice. Thankfully, I’ve recovered quite well from my stroke.”

Cath began her career as a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at the old Pendlebury Children’s Hospital and was then a matron at The Maples, a specialist unit attached to Salford Royal Hospital.
