Julie’s story

Hear from our supporter Julie about her experience taking part in Will Month, and remembering St Ann's Hospice in her Will.

Julie has seen St Ann’s Hospice in different ways – as a patient, nurse and family member. Her involvement meant she had no hesitation in supporting St Ann’s during Will Month. This is her story.

She said: “My husband Andrew and I had been thinking about making a Will for some time. We saw Will Month advertised in a hospice mailshot and decided it was time to finally get it done.

“We thought it might be complicated, but it was all quite simple and we chose a local solicitor who kindly gave his time for free in exchange for a suggested donation to the hospice.”

It was a smooth process and the money we’d have spent on a solicitor went to St Ann’s which meant we could support them. Julie, St Ann's supporter

“A Will is something we should have done years ago. We have four grown up children and seven lovely grandchildren and wanted to make it easier for them. Everything written down formally gives us peace of mind.

“My illness prompted me to make a Will. I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma three years ago and received psychological and emotional support from St Ann’s. My condition is stable, though I suffer from fatigue and know the hospice are there for me if I ever need them.

“It’s nearly 30 years since I was a student nurse there. A few years later my auntie Mary passed away at the hospice and they looked after our family as much as her.”

I’d encourage people to use Will Month – it’s easy to do and gives money to the hospice. You never know when you might need them. Julie, St Ann's supporter

“We’ve also left a gift to the hospice in our Will; a legacy is our way of paying them back for all the care and support I’ve had and we know it costs a lot of money to run the hospice.”
