Sandra’s story

Sandra volunteers with us in a number of different roles across the hospice.

How did you get into volunteering?

My husband passed away in 2012 and I was looking for some volunteering to help fill my time.  A friend of mine was already volunteering at the hospice and suggested that I help at the Christmas Fair. I did this and was made to feel part of the team so I then signed up to volunteer on a regular basis.

Tell us about your role

I volunteer in many roles – firstly I help with admin in the Fundraising Office. I also have a round of collection tins that I replace on a regular basis around Heald Green, Wythenshawe, Cheadle, and Northenden.  I also help at some events e.g. Bubble Rush, Christmas Fairs, Summer Fairs, Light up a Life, etc.  Lastly, as I sew, I now repair any bride or bridesmaid dresses, that are donated to our Cheadle shop.

What do you like about volunteering?

By volunteering, I feel that I am doing something worthwhile and also enjoy the company of the people in the office.

What would you say to anyone thinking about volunteering for the fundraising team?

I would say ‘DO IT’ as everyone is really grateful for what you do to help be it for an hour or a full day.
