St Ann’s Employee takes on the Manchester Virtual Walk

Lesley Turner has spent a lifetime caring for others and is still as devoted as she continues her mission to help those in need.

She is taking part in the Manchester Virtual Walk in aid of St Ann’s where she has worked as a health care assistant for 16 years. Much of that time in the bank nursing team overlapped with a 37-year career in social services from which she retired three years ago.

Lesley, from Marple, is part of a St Ann’s group tackling the 10km walk between the 14th to the 17th of May, over our 50th birthday weekend. The 10km walk can be done however and whenever participants like and can be completed in one go, or split up.

Lesley’s late parents Win and Vic used to run a shoe shop on Market Street, Marple. Her hardest time was when her mum was a patient at our Heald Green hospice in 2014.

I’ve seen St Ann’s from both sides, personally and professionally, and am proud to be part of the hospice team. Patients always come first and it’s a privilege to work there. Mum had oesophageal cancer and it was extremely emotional when she spent two months at the hospice. It was difficult both on a professional and personal level and I had to take time out. Fundraising is so important, especially as Covid has taken a lot of those funds away and everyone is doing their best to help. The more sponsors and participants we can get for the Virtual Walk the better.

Shops with Style

Our high street shops are now open, now featuring a brand new makeover in celebration of our big birthday year.

In the run-up to re-opening the stores, our Trading Team and volunteers have been working hard to create window shop displays filled with colour, balloons and special items to mark the milestone year.

Stockport

Our Stockport shop, which is soon to feature our bridal collection upstairs, whilst keeping the special vintage selection in the downstairs section, has incorporated the retro theme, introducing a 70s twist to the shop front.

St Ann’s first opened in 1971, a special year that brought hospice care to the area, ensuring the Greater Manchester community had specialist care and support for those living with life-limiting illnesses.

Edgeley

To mark our 50 years, our Edgeley shop has filled the window with golden balloons and birthday messages to spread the celebrations through the high street.

For over five decades St Ann’s has been providing vital care and support. During these years, our care has developed and changed but our ethos remains the same with our patients being at the heart of our care.

Romiley

The Romiley shop has also incorporated the birthday with balloons and banners that have been perfectly placed around our shop items, including pieces from our popular Kasbah Bazaar and limited edition 50th anniversary range.

Included in the window display is a fashion doll featuring historical facts about St Ann’s shops which have raised vital funds for our hospice, thanks to the generous donations of our supporters.

Heald Green

Welcoming you into the Heald Green shop is a nice archway of golden balloons to mark the 50 years St Ann’s has been delivering care and support to the Greater Manchester community.

The team have been decorating the shop with celebratory baskets and items to bring the celebrations to life for all St Ann’s shoppers.

Sale

Our Sale shop team have been brightening up the window with our latest items from our anniversary range. As we celebrate our 50th year, we’ve released a number of limited edition items that include a pin, pen, bag, mug, travel cup and more.

Every item enables you to share your support whilst raising vital funds for your local hospice. View our entire 50th anniversary range here.

A year being High Sheriff

High Sheriff Eamonn O'Neal who is also a Director at St Ann's Hospice

“It was a huge honour and quite humbling to be chosen by the Queen as High Sheriff of Greater Manchester. I have been very grateful to have had the chance to connect and engage with the charitable, voluntary, faith, ethnic, cultural and business communities across the county.

“The role Office of High Sheriff is the oldest secular title in British history and among the most ancient in the world, dating back more than 1,300 years.  At that time, the Sheriff represented the monarch, collected taxes, raised armies and was the rule of law across the county.

“I haven’t been collecting taxes, or raising an army, but I have had a unique opportunity to connect in a meaningful way with local communities, charities, good causes and amazing individuals.

“Being High Sheriff has allowed me to highlight the charities on which I serve as a trustee: The Dianne Oxberry Trust; Caritas; The Brain and Spinal Injury Centre and The Diocese of Salford.

“I am very proud to have been involved with St Ann’s Hospice for many years, as a patron, Chair of Trustees, Chief Executive and latterly Director of Strategic Initiatives.  I should like to pay tribute to my colleagues at St Ann’s Hospice for the way they look after the communities of Greater Manchester. St Ann’s is one of the oldest and largest hospices in the country and we’re about to celebrate our 50th anniversary.

“We’re also embarking on a huge capital fundraising project, hoping to build a new hospice, next to the existing one in Heald Green. Thanks very much if you are already a supporter of St Ann’s, your contribution is essential as we only get around one-third of the money we need from NHS contracts. That means we have to raise, with your help £20,000 every single day.

“In another landmark for me personally, the Sunday morning BBC Radio Manchester programme that I’ve been presenting with Jimmy Wagg for the past 32 years, is coming to an end. We’ve decided to hang up our headphones and make way for the next generation of broadcasters.

“But before we go, we’ve got one final theatre show at the amazing Stockport Plaza – and every single penny raised will be going directly to St Ann’s Hospice. The date for your diary is Sunday 19 September and tickets are going fast. Please come and join us as we take our final bow.

As I take of my High Sheriff’s sword and pack away my BBC microphone, I will have even more time to dedicate to the work at St Ann’s and I hope you can join me in continuing to support the hospice’s fundraising challenges. “

Broadstone Mill Employees Walk for St Ann’s

Staff at Broadstone Mill Shopping Outlet within Broadstone Mill in Reddish – once the largest cotton spinning mill in the world – are holding a charity walk linked to the site’s history and heritage.

Claire Vincent, Marketing Manager at Broadstone Mill Shopping Outlet, said: “When it was a working mill the last leg of the cotton’s journey was along the Manchester Ship Canal.

“We’re walking as far as we can in March, with over a million steps walked in the first week of the challenge. We’re then working out how many times we’d have walked up the Ship Canal. The activity has brought staff together, even though most are furloughed.”

Over a century ago the building echoed to the sound of machines. From Monday, April 12, it will hopefully be the noise from ringing tills and chatting customers when the outlet finally reopens after being closed for much of the last year due to Covid-19.

Broadstone Mill Shopping Outlet, the department store with two floors of shopping and places to eat, has chosen our hospice as its charity of the year.

We can’t wait to open again. It’s been a long time and we’re looking forward to seeing regular and new customers too. We’ve done some refurbing in the store while we’ve had the opportunity so we can’t wait to show this off. It’s very exciting to be opening the doors! There are 17 of us doing the walking challenge to kick off our fundraising activities for St Ann’s. Apparently, a nurse or carer at the hospice walks an average of three miles a day, so that’s been our daily minimum target, although one staff member covered 54 miles in the first week. We’d recommend any other businesses to select St Ann’s as their chosen charity, especially as the hospice celebrates its 50th birthday this year.”

Local Solicitors support St Ann’s during Will Month

A Bramhall solicitor firm has pledged to support St Ann’s by offering a free Will writing service for people from across Greater Manchester.

Butcher and Barlow LLP in Bramhall is supporting St Ann’s during our Will Month campaign, for the second year, pledging to raise much-needed funds for our hospice, whilst helping local people to gain peace of mind from getting their affairs in order.

Matthew Watson, who is based at the firm’s Bramhall branch, along with colleagues Claire Jackson from their Leigh office, and Donna Crossthwaite from the Prestwich office will all be waiving their usual fees for preparing a simple Will or mirror Wills, and instead asking clients to make a donation to St Ann’s. They join a range of other solicitors from the area who have pledged their support for the popular campaign in aid of local patients.

I cannot stress enough the importance of making a Will – for peace of mind if nothing else. We hope that this initiative will be the perfect opportunity for people to think about getting their affairs in order, whilst benefitting a local charity that is invaluable to the community of Greater Manchester.

Matthew Watson, Wills and Probate specialist at Butcher and Barlow LLP

Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive of our hospice, said: “As a charity, we rely on the kind support of businesses and individuals from our local community and we’re so grateful to the team at Butcher and Barlow LLP for partnering with us for our Will Month again this year.

Around a third of our income every year comes thanks to the amazing generosity of people who remember us in their Will – it’s a truly lasting legacy that means we can continue to provide specialist care to local patients and their loved ones.

“People joining Butcher and Barlow LLP for this initiative don’t need to be previous supporters of St Ann’s, and they don’t need to be leaving a gift in their Will to us either.  If they do decide to do so that would be hugely appreciated, but, hopefully by taking part and writing or updating their Will they will get real peace of mind from getting their affairs in order and ensuring their loved ones know their wishes.”

CEO Signs up to the Manchester Virtual Walk

“Our 50th anniversary year has been something we’ve been planning for a long time.

“As one of the oldest hospices in the UK, we’re so proud to have reached this milestone, and feedback from our supporters and the patients and families we care for is that they’d love to see us celebrate in style throughout 2021.

“When we started to put plans in place for this landmark year in our history, little did we know how different the world would be.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has certainly challenged all of us at the hospice in lots of ways. But, despite those challenges, it has also meant we’ve been able to come together to quickly evolve services, collaborate with others locally, and join forces with individuals and groups in our local community to make sure we could continue to care for those who needed us.

“Fundraising has been challenging of course, with many events and activities cancelled. So many people have kindly signed up to take part in one of our special 50th birthday activities and we couldn’t be more grateful for the support of everyone who has helped us through this really difficult period.

“As part of our 50th anniversary, we’d been planning to hold a special birthday Manchester Midnight Walk. As many of you will know, the Midnight Walk has been our flagship event for more than a decade, with participants raising more than £2million for our patients over the years.

“But, due to restrictions, we’ve had to make the difficult decision that we won’t be able to hold the event in its usual form – but the good news is, we’ve adapted it to mean people from across Greater Manchester can still join in, taking part safely in whatever way works best for them.

“For this year’s Manchester Virtual Walk, we’re challenging participants to complete a 10km sponsored walk whenever, however and wherever they like.  The distance can be completed all in one go, or can be split over multiple days, and people can walk, skip, run or hop – whatever they’d like to do!  We’re encouraging people to take part over our birthday weekend from 14th to 17th May, but if that doesn’t work for you, you can simply choose a different date and get walking.

“We’ve given the event a 70s theme this year, nodding to 1971 when St Ann’s first opened its doors.  Some of those signing up are already pledging to take part in fancy dress, and many are also taking advantage of the 1970s music playlist to get their feet moving even more quickly for the challenge.

“Everyone who signs up will get a t-shirt and free fundraising pack, and will also receive a special birthday edition medal on completion.

“I’ve signed up and am raring to go – will you please join me?”

Relaxation Session for Businesses!

Employees from local businesses are being offered the opportunity to join a free virtual relaxation session to help them unwind and take time out.

Our Complementary Therapist Ruth Dawson will be running the free session online on Thursday 25th March at 3pm, giving people the chance to take 30 minutes break to help relieve stress.

Ruth said: “At St Ann’s relaxation is such an important part of the care we offer to patients and their loved ones, and during the pandemic in particular, many members of our staff have also found it extremely beneficial to both their physical and mental health.

“After seeing the benefits, we thought that staff from other organisations might also like to take part, and I’m hoping they will leave with more energy and a clearer and calmer mind.

“Taking time out to relax can actually improve productivity, and it also helps to relieve stress, slow down breathing and the heart rate, and can increase the flow of blood to our muscles too.  It’s a short session, so hopefully people will find it easy to fit it into their day, and will be able to take away lots of ideas on carrying the practice forward too.

It’s arguably more important than ever for people to look after not only their physical health but also their mental health too, and we’re really pleased that Ruth has agreed to run this session for local businesses.

It will hopefully not only leave participants feeling rested and with tools they can apply to their daily life in the future, but will also give an insight into one of the less well known services we offer to patients and their loved ones.

Megan Kemp, Corporate Fundraiser

Our Corporate Fundraiser, Megan, went on to say: “When people think of hospices, they often think about end of life care and patients on our wards, but while that’s a huge and important part of what we do, we also provide a range of other services that support patients from the point of diagnosis of a life-limiting illness, through treatment and beyond.

“Ruth and the other members of the Complementary Therapy Team play an important part in that holistic care provision, and we’re hoping people from across the Greater Manchester business community take advantage of this session and join us on 25th March.

Manchester Virtual Walk 2021

Fundraisers from St Ann's prepare for the Manchester Virtual Walk

The Manchester Midnight Walk will have a virtual twist this year, as we respond creatively to the pandemic restrictions and adapt the event to ensure our biggest fundraiser of the year can continue.

The city is normally buzzing with excitement each year as more than a thousand participants take to the streets for the sponsored 10km walk in aid of our patients.

This year’s event was set to be bigger and better than ever before to mark our 50th anniversary on 17th May, but when lockdown and Covid-19 restrictions led to the cancellation of the physical event, we had to think creatively about how supporters can still raise funds

Rachel McMillan, St Ann’s Chief Executive, said: “It’s really disappointing that we can’t hold the Manchester Midnight Walk in the usual way this year – it’s been running for fourteen years, and walkers have raised a staggering £2million for the hospice in that time.

“But, the safety of our supporters is the most important thing to us, and our team have come up with a way that people from across the city can still join in and take part in our birthday edition of the walk, just with a virtual twist this year.”

We’re inviting you to sign up and take on the challenge to walk 10km over the hospice’s 50th birthday weekend from 14th to 17th May. You can choose to walk 10km in one go, or to split it into smaller chunks, and can decide to complete the distance whenever and wherever you wish.

Rachel added:

As a charity, our doctors, nurses other healthcare and support staff have only been able to continue caring for patients on the front line throughout this pandemic, thanks to the generous support of the community, so we’re hugely grateful to anyone who is able to join us and take part this year. So many of our events and activities have had to be cancelled in recent months, and it would mean so much if people could pledge to get outside, have some exercise, and raise a bit of money for our patients at the same time.  We even have people taking part who will do the distance with laps of their garden. It’s a really challenging time for all of us, but hopefully people will embrace the Manchester Virtual Walk and join us, whilst staying safe and keeping within government rules and guidelines.  Thank you in advance to anyone who does sign up to take part.  I can’t thank you enough, and it really will make a huge difference during an extremely difficult time.

Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive

Participants will receive a free fundraising pack and yellow t-shirt to don during their walk, and will also be sent an exclusive medal on completion.
