The Running  Nurse

Kelly Foster is a Ward Manager at our hospice in Heald Green. It’s a demanding job and Kelly works hard to ensure that all her patients have everything they need and are being looked after as well as possible.

But that’s not all Kelly has done for our patients, her dedication has gone far beyond what is expected of her.

Over the last few years, Kelly has taken part in the Great North Run and the London Marathon twice, each time running in her navy nurse’s uniform, to raise money for St Ann’s.

Kelly has been inspired to take on these challenges by the patients she cares for each day.

Sister Kelly

It’s really awe-inspiring to see the strength and positivity of the patients that come
to St Ann’s. Until I worked here I thought I had an understanding of what a hospice was, but even I, as a nurse, was surprised by what an amazing – and often incredibly happy – place it is.

I see the real, tangible difference that the money raised for our charity by supporters makes. Whether that’s in helping us care for a family as a loved one approaches the end of their life,  providing valuable support for people who have recently been diagnosed, or giving rehabilitative treatments to someone who wants nothing more than to go back to their own home, every penny actually does impact real people’s lives.

Each event was a really hard challenge, especially as I suffer from a condition called Ehlers Danloss Syndrome which means my joints really hurt when I do physical exercise. But when
the training got tough, I just thought about our patients and that really spurred me on to push that extra mile.

To help reach her fundraising target, Kelly also organised a charity ball. In total she has raised more than an incredible £16,000 for St Ann’s, and we couldn’t be prouder to have her as part of Team St Ann’s.

Maria helps gardens bloom for St Ann’s

Then enthusiastic garden designer Maria Stripling, from Didsbury, is ready to help out in return for a donation to St Ann’s.

Maria knows the back gardens of most local homes as well as the front, having organised the hugely-popular Didsbury Open Gardens for the last 11 years.

A nice garden can enhance lives mentally and physically and provide an extension to a home. I’m offering to take a look at someone’s garden and provide ideas, with a design sketch, for a £100 donation.

I’ve designed a few gardens, including my own, and would love to give home owners ideas and inspiration. Autumn is also the perfect time to plan a new-look garden next summer.

Maria Stripling

Maria aims to raise £16,000 for St Ann’s, with an Arctic trek in March as part of her fundraising plans.

She has also secured a generous donation from a friend who  has commissioned her to design a Japanese Zen garden to remember a holiday with her late husband.

Close friends I’ve lost wouldn’t have had quality time with family and a good death without the support of a hospice and the wonderful teams who work there.

Didsbury Open Gardens has raised almost £90,000 for St Ann’s.

Our Snowdon challenge!

Three guides, 17 trekkers and one dog took on the challenge of conquering Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, for St Ann’s on Saturday 28th September.

We started at 10am and battled atrocious weather for the ascent, being blown around and rained on pretty much constantly; making us a pretty tired and cold bunch when we stopped for lunch at the summit. Thankfully, on the way down the clouds started to roll over and we could reflect on the enormity of the challenge we’d just completed.

For some, it was their first time, not just climbing Snowdon, but any serious walking and even for repeat walkers the conditions made this a tough physical challenge.

On the descent we could relax and enjoy the scenery and each other’s company and talk about what it meant to each of us; with some really heartfelt stories about what it meant to take part and support St Ann’s.

Thank you to every member of the group, collectively they have currently raised almost £5,000 and some are still fundraising. Every penny and every pound they raise is making a difference to all those we support who are living with a life-limiting illness.

We’re already planning the challenge again for September 2020 so watch this space and email events@sah.org.uk to register your interest.

Celebration night to honour Linda’s memory

The charity event on Saturday, November 16, is organised by son Tabe Obaide to raise funds for St Ann’s who cared for her over a long period.

Mum-of-three Linda (54), who worked at Manchester Royal Infirmary, died in December 2015 and had been diagnosed with cancer 10 years earlier.

Tabe, brother  Nabeel and sister Afifa, are asking for donations for a raffle and silent auction.

It’ll be an informal, fun evening with music and dancing and the more the merrier.

That’s what my mum would have liked. I’ll never be able to repay St Ann’s for their care, but I’ll do my best. Doctors initially gave her less than 18 months to live but she refused to give up.

She looked after everyone else before herself and would give the bin men, postman and lollipop man a present at Christmas. Of all the medical care she received, she had the best experience at St Ann’s in Heald Green where the staff were so friendly and attentive.

Tabe , Linda’s son

A signed Man Utd shirt, weekend break and pamper day are among the many prizes being collected. Tickets at £20 are available from Tabe on 07764 997204 or email tabebadey@hotmail.com.

Celebration Tree unveiled at our Little Hulton hospice

The beautiful copper sculpture decorated with gold, silver and bronze leaves and birds was commissioned to help mark 40 years of specialist palliative care in Little Hulton.

The plaques are dedicated to someone special and can be engraved with their names. They may have been a patient, or have worked or volunteered at St Ann’s

The Ceremonial Mayor Cllr Charlie McIntyre joined families and friends of patients at the unveiling in the hospice reception on Wednesday, October 9, 2019.

Peter Tonge, District Secretary, attended the unveiling representing Salford Masons, who have generously funded the tree as part of their on-going support for the charity, meaning that all donations can directly benefit patient care. Also in attendance was last year’s Ceremonial Mayor of Salford Cllr Ronnie Wilson whose donation as part of the Community Chest grant from the Ceremonial Mayor of Salford’s Charity Appeal funded a bird plaque for the tree.

Michael was an inpatient at St Ann’s which did a wonderful job. I feel in my comfort zone when I walk in here.

Helen Molloy, Bought a leaf in memory of husband Michael who died of cancer in March.

This is a way of remembering my aunt and helping the hospice which couldn’t do enough for her when she was a patient. The staff were fabulous.

Gillian Allport (Niece of Ruby Thompson), The family of Ruby Thompson, from Astley, who died of cancer in April, have donated towards a plaque.

Hopefully the tree will blossom as more of our supporters celebrate the life of someone special. The tree also recognises the 40th anniversary of our Little Hulton hospice where we continue to provide care and support to local people when they need help most.

Eamonn O’Neal, Chief Executive of St Ann’s Hospice

Plaques remain on the tree for a year and donors can then renew their donation or take them home.

Leaves cost £50 minimum yearly, or £4.16 monthly, over a minimum 12-month period. Bird plaques are £500 annually or £41.66 if paid monthly.

The Howard Charity Gala

Mel was diagnosed with lung cancer and attended St Ann’s Hospice in Little Hulton initially as a day care patient before her condition deteriorated and she became an inpatient where she died aged 52 in December 2016.

The fundraising event, in her memory, will take place at Albert’s Worsley on Saturday October 12. Tickets are £35 and include a BBQ buffet, entertainment from a saxophonist and DJ, plus there will be a raffle and auction to raise more money on the night.

This year the special event will take place four days after Mel’s 55th birthday, so the event will be even more poignant and she will be the toast of family and friends at the gala to celebrate her life.

It’s not just Faye, who has been fundraising for St Ann’s, her dad, Paul, has taken part in many different sporting events over the year which has contributed to their total.

The care my mum received at St Ann’s was truly amazing, it was really personal to her and the doctors and nurses really tailored everything to her needs and wishes. As a family we were all made to feel welcome and we were able to stay over in one of the family rooms. The last two events have been really great nights and everyone really gets behind raising money for St Ann’s. Last year the DJ even managed to auction off a tin of beans for £45! I think we’ve already raised over £10,000 from the gala and sporting events and our target is to raise £20,000, as we want to be able to help pay for a day of care.

Retired doctor supports St Ann’s with concert

Dr Kevin

He is part of the organising team bringing the European Doctors’ Orchestra to The Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, to raise funds for St Ann’s Hospice.

The concert on Sunday, October 20 (7.30 pm) promises to be a spectacular night of classical music as specialists in medicine use instruments of a different kind to entertain a packed audience.

Tickets are priced £22.50, including booking fee, and are selling fast and are available from The Bridgewater Hall (bridgewater-hall.co.uk).

Kevin, from Wilmslow, is a bassoonist with the orchestra which performs twice yearly at different  European locations.

We raise money for charities related to health and well being, very often linked to cancer, children or hospices. The orchestra is made up of medical doctors from across Europe with a high level of musical training and skill.

Four months ago I retired from my role at Stepping Hill Hospital where I specialised in chronic pain management and had occasionally been involved with St Ann’s Hospice, both as a lecturer and a learner, during training days.

Kevin O’Sullivan

Kevin is principal bassoonist with Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra, one of several orchestras of which he is a member.  He is learning Spanish, enjoys cycling, Tai Chi and Pilates and is also project managing an extension to his house so is busier than ever.

The St Ann’s concert, celebrating the human spirit, features Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, Brahms’ Song of Destiny and Symphony No. 7 Leningrad by Shostakovich. The orchestra will be accompanied by the St George’s Singers.

Ode to Life

‘Ode to Life’, by Linda Wyers, is described by the author as a collection of odes and poems about love, life and everything in between, and is dedicated to her husband Martin Charles Wyers.

Martin, who founded the family’s business Floorbrite in 1972, died of bowel cancer in December 2010 aged 61, and the book is raising money for three organisations that supported him and his loved ones throughout his illness – St Ann’s Hospice, Bowel Cancer UK, and The Christie Hospital.

I’ve written odes from being in my early 20s, particularly for family and friends, but as I have grown older I have been inspired to write and put observations and experiences of life into verse.
All of my odes are about things I have seen, done, encountered or love, and range from mashed potato to mosquitoes, and queuing to taxation, and although a few are hugely poignant, most of them see the funny side of life. I hope they will make people smile, and on occasion even laugh out loud.

Linda Wyers

The book includes more than 25 odes, each written by Linda.  Copies cost £10 plus postage each, with all proceeds except for postage costs split equally between the three charities.

Martin’s disease was stage four from the outset, and although doctors didn’t tell us that he wasn’t expected to live twelve months, he actually bravely fought for three and a half years.
Martin was a very generous and successful business man who loved and did everything possible for his family. He founded Floorbrite in 1972 and he managed it until his passing. Today myself and our three gorgeous children Nina, Alex and Nik run the business, with a family ethos at its core, and it’s testament to the strong foundations which Martin created and the incredible hard work of our children that the business still thrives today.

Linda Wyers

Floorbrite is a commercial cleaning and facilities provider, and the company employs 1,300 people.

St Ann’s Hospice, one of the charities the book is raising money for, cared for Martin during his illness.

We’re honoured that Linda has chosen St Ann’s to benefit from the proceeds of her fabulous book. It’s such a beautiful tribute to her husband, and the odes cover a delightful mix of topics. Thanks so much to Linda for her support of the hospice, as the money raised will help us to provide care to other families too.
