Could you walk 100 miles for St Ann’s this September?

We’re challenging you to get sponsored to walk 100 miles throughout September.

You can walk in your own time, at your own pace and share your journey with others taking on the challenge.

Susan Davies is taking on the challenge and is excited to get started. Susan says: “I have experience of people I know needing support and comfort in their final days and I wanted to help St Ann’s guarantee care and a pleasant environment for the patients and their extended family.

“I walk a lot in my job but don’t walk as much as I would like, so these challenges help me do more intentional walking.”

I did the last Walk 100 Miles in September in 2021 and I loved it! My favourite thing was getting out in the September weather and knowing that I was not only benefitting St Ann’s but I was benefitting my own health as well.

Every penny you raise will make a difference to St Ann’s patients and their loved ones.

This challenge is for everyone who loves walking and every mile you complete will make a real difference, the important thing is getting out and raising vital funds for St Ann’s Hospice. We would love as many people as possible to join in and raise what you can to support the patients and families we care for.

Marie Foster, Innovation and Digital Fundraiser, St Ann’s Hospice

St Ann’s Hospice will send you a free Walk 100 miles t-shirt for you to wear with pride throughout the challenge! There is no registration fee, with everything raised going towards the ongoing care of patients and families.

Complete your challenge during September and share your progress in the private Facebook group, with St Ann’s supporting you every step of the way.

I found it useful to update my miles in the Facebook group and seeing other people’s progress was a real motivator too.

Susan Davies, Supporter

Susan says: “I found it useful to update my miles in the Facebook group and seeing other people’s progress was a real motivator too.

“I’m also looking forward to seeing how much money I can raise, knowing that whatever the amount it will really benefit not only the patients, but also their wider circle.”

“I know times are hard for people at the moment, so I’m planning to do a sweepstake at work, where I provide the prize and people guess how many miles I’ll have done by the end of the challenge as who knows, I may even do more than 100!”

Throughout the month you can ask your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours to sponsor you. We’ve set a sponsorship target of £150, but just ask that you set up a fundraising page and do your very best!

A decade of support

St Ann’s were incredible with everything they did for my mum. From the moment she went into St Ann’s, Mum was so much brighter.

Joanna Kiely

Jo has reached out to our Let’s Talk counselling service three times, and has been welcomed by our team each time. Her first sessions helped her to get through the first Christmas without her mum.

In 2017, Jo lost her brother Dave very suddenly. She said: “Dave’s death absolutely destroyed me. I contacted St Ann’s after this and immediately started having counselling sessions again, they welcomed me back straight away.”

At the start of last year Jo took a huge step backward in her grief journey. “I felt ashamed about this step backwards and it took me longer than it should have to contact St Ann’s. I never should’ve worried about this though as I was booked in for more sessions which have helped me so much. I truly wouldn’t be standing if it wasn’t for the hospice.”

A regular, reliable income is vital to St Ann’s, so that we can care for the patients and loved ones like Joanna who need us – now and in the future.

Giving regular donations is one way of helping us to sustain the continuing support we provide. It provides a predictable income stream for the hospice, allowing us to better plan for the future, be more efficient, and ensure we can help as many people impacted by life-limiting illness as possible.

You can choose to donate monthly, quarterly or annually, and the amount is up to you too.

  • £8.55 could pay for food for a day for one of our inpatients.
  • £30.60 could pay for a bereavement session for someone like Joanna.

Joanna’s story demonstrates what an impact your donations can make. Because of your support we are able to be there for people like Joanna to support through the grieving journey. Every penny contributes to creating a better experience for those in our care and their families.

Friends raise money through open water swimming in memory of loved ones

Paula and Maxine have been challenging themselves with open water swimming, raising money for their loved ones who were cared for by our hospice.

Paula and Maxine have always swam together and love being outside in the open water. The pair have swam in open water at least twice a month from November 2023 to March 2024, sometime in wetsuits and sometimes bravely in swimsuits. They both enjoy being out in nature and swam mainly in open water in Wigan and Bury.

St Ann’s is close to Maxine’s heart as we cared for her father-in-law Denis who had lung cancer. Denis attended the Being You Centre around 10 years ago.

St Ann’s Hospice helped my lovely father-in-law Denis in the last few months of his life. He loved visiting St Ann’s every Friday and would come home telling us how good his day was. We will forever be grateful for that.

Maxine

Paula has been connected to St Ann’s for some years with friends and family members being cared for by our hospice. In 2023 Paula’s uncle was a patient at St Ann’s.

My uncle received amazing care at St Ann’s Hospice for which we were truly grateful for, there is such a peaceful atmosphere at the hospice which I love.

Paula

Maxine and Paula have supported St Ann’s in the past too, volunteering for one of our Midnight Walks and face painting at our fairs.

Maxine and Paula have raised an incredible £637 for our hospice, and we are so grateful for their support.

Support St Ann’s and be in with the chance to win £5,000 this summer

You could be in with the chance to win the top prize of £5,000 and be able to help us to care for patients and their loved ones in their time of need.

James Humphries is a Cross-Site Charge Nurse at the hospice. James says: “I’ve been at St Ann’s Hospice for over a year, first working as a Staff Nurse in the Inpatient Unit before recently taking on a new position as Cross-Site Charge Nurse. This means I work across the Inpatient Units at both our hospices as one of the senior nurses looking after our patients.

“It’s a demanding role and a lot of responsibility, but it’s a privilege to be able to look after people in their last days and hours – as well as their families. We make sure that they are all as comfortable as possible.

“I came into palliative care because it’s what I’m passionate about. At St Ann’s, that care is holistic and based around what the patients want. We have conversations about what matters most to them and help them to make this a reality in the last days of life.

“We can have up to 18 patients at a time at one site, all with different diagnoses and different needs, and we care for their families and loved ones too.

“We couldn’t do this without your support. St Ann’s provides this excellent care free of charge to those who need it, but we rely on fundraising and donations from our community to continue.”

Could you help St Ann’s Hospice this year by entering the Summer Raffle? Tickets are just £1 each, and with £5,000 up for grabs you can get your tickets online now at www.sah.org.uk/raffle. You can also buy them at St Ann’s charity shops around the Stockport borough.

The closing date for entering the raffle is Sunday 4th August, with the raffle being drawn on Wednesday 14th August, and winners will be notified and details placed on their website.

I hope you’ll join in to support us by buying as many tickets as you can. On behalf of everyone at the hospice, our patients, and their families, thank you once again for your support – and good luck!

Don’t miss out on the Teddy Bear Picnic

Face Painting at the Summer Fair

The return of the Little Hulton Summer Fair has lots to offer for everyone and you can join the fun on Saturday 13th July 2024.

There will be a fabulous Teddy Bear Picnic as well as the Salford Mayor and Salford Red Devils players opening the fair at 12pm. The day will also include live entertainment, a local Bollywood dance group performance from 1-2pm, face painting, refreshments and food stalls, tombolas, a teddy bear stall and much more!

The fair has been kindly organised by the Little Hulton volunteer fundraising committee on behalf of St Ann’s, to help raise vital funds for their hospice to care for patients and their loved ones.

We are thrilled to announce our upcoming Summer Fair, led by a group of dedicated volunteers who successfully ran a brilliant Winter Fair in 2023. Our volunteer-led committee is bringing the community together once again and making a real difference to St Ann’s Hospice.

Christmas comes early at St Ann’s

It may be July and the sun is finally shining, but that hasn’t stopped us from getting into the Christmas spirit here at St Ann’s Hospice.

JustHelping recently shared the total amount raised through our partnership on the Christmas Tree Collection Appeal, and we couldn’t be more thrilled.

We are delighted to announce that our collaboration with JustHelping raised an incredible £65,187 for St Ann’s Hospice during the 2023/24 campaign.

These funds were raised by collecting Christmas trees from across Manchester, Salford, Stockport and Trafford in January for recycling. Generous supporters made donations in exchange for this excellent service, which not only raised vital money for our hospice and other local charities but also benefited the environment!

Over the last nine years, JustHelping has raised more than £309,000 for St Ann’s. We are incredibly grateful for their ongoing support and we cannot wait to roll out this year’s Christmas tree collection campaign.

Volunteer complementary therapist Pat giving back to St Ann’s who cared for her mum

Like many other people, Pat has a personal connection to her local hospice which is why she started volunteering. Pat says: “My mother was cared for by St Ann’s for a short while at the Heald Green site. This was during the pandemic, so there were lots of restrictions in place but St Ann’s were so good at letting me stay with my mum when I could.

“My mum found the care given to her incredible, and although she sadly passed away three years ago, it changed her life and my family’s life so much being connected to St Ann’s Hospice.

“I then got into a routine of raising money in different ways for the hospice, and attended the Autumn Fair last year. I met a complementary therapist when I was there and she gave me a hand massage. I explained to her that I knew about massage techniques as I had volunteered at the Christie previously. I had a friend with cancer who was involved with the Christie and enjoyed the complimentary therapy she received which is what got me into it.

“After losing my mum I wanted to give back and find a way to spend my time now I didn’t have my mum to look after at home.”

Complementary therapy was not the profession that Pat had practiced, having been a teacher in Worsley for 37 years prior. However, Pat did a full range of training and has transferred that to work with cancer patients and those with life-limiting conditions.

Pat now volunteers one day a week at the Little Hulton site and she finds this so rewarding. “I get far more out of the complimentary therapy than what I am able to give, the patients are so lovely and so accepting of any help I can give them.

“I know there are so many ways you can volunteer, I’ve met lots of other people volunteering in different parts of the hospice.”

When Pat arrives at the hospice she checks in with the rehab team who share their handover notes with her, which detail which patients would like therapy that day. The complementary therapy team can deliver lots of treatments, many of which help patients sleep, relax them or help alleviate pain problems. These include Reiki healing sessions, reflexology and more specific guided massages on the feet.

“There are a range of treatments I offer patients, and I have recently given these treatments to friends and family who are with their loved one at the hospice. They are also in need of relaxation and attention, so it’s nice I can be there for them as well.

“Many patients have never been pampered, understandably because a lot of the people are older, so it isn’t something that’s been part of their lifestyle. Often men have never been offered these treatments before either.

“I thoroughly enjoy being part of the complementary therapy team as a volunteer. I can always speak to the doctors and nurses at the wards, and they all recognise that we are working together for the holistic wellbeing of the people that are at St Ann’s. I couldn’t recommend volunteering more.”

Important news about Moya’s Manchester Walk

It’s with great disappointment that we announce St Ann’s Hospice’s upcoming Moya’s Manchester Walk, due to take place on 14th June 2024, has regrettably been cancelled. This has been a very difficult decision to make and we understand, like us, our wonderful supporters will be disappointed.

Our reason for cancellation is we have not had sufficient participant sign-ups to make the walk financially viable or to provide participants with a great experience.

The walk is a fundraising event and monies raised contribute to the vital funds we need to help provide our hospice services, and therefore we have to ensure that the cost of running the event is met from the sign-up fees, associated sponsorships and donations. On this occasion, should the event have gone ahead, the hospice would have had a shortfall.

Our Events Team have contacted all registered participants to advise them of the news directly.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the Events Team on events@sah.org.uk or 0161 498 3631.

St Ann’s extends sincere apologies for any inconvenience and disappointment. We truly value our supporters and thank you for your understanding.
