Bubble Rush launch!

Registration has just opened for the 5km sponsored Bubble Rush run, which will be taking place in Wythenshawe Park on Saturday 29 June.

The family friendly event sees participants take on the course around the park, complete with four bubble stations pumping out masses of multi-coloured foam.

Money raised at the sponsored event will help us care for the patients and families it supports from across Greater Manchester.

Our ObstaColour Run last year was a huge success with great feedback, and we wanted to build something even better for 2019. We can’t wait to see everyone coming to the park to get messy, have fun, and join us in raising lots of money for local people who really need the specialist care we provide.
We’d love as many people as possible to sign up to join us on the day. All are welcome, and everyone who takes part will receive a medal, with bubblers over the age of three also receiving a t-shirt for completing the course.
Please do sign up today and bring your friends and family along too. As a charity we only receive around a third of our funding from the NHS, so have to raise around £20,000 a day just to keep all of our services for patients running. Every step bubble runners take really will make a difference to the lives of our patients.

Eamonn O’Neal , Chief Executive

Waves of runners start from 11am on the day, and a special early bird entry fee is available to everyone who signs up before 31 March.

Radio broadcaster Phil Trow is buzzing to be part of this year’s Manchester Midnight Walk!

Phil Trow and Carl Austin Behan at a recent Midnight Walk

The Manchester Midnight Walk, which will take place on Friday 26th April, has become a staple on the city’s fundraising calendar, with last year’s event raising £163,795.09 for St Ann’s, bringing the total raised since its launch to more than £2million. The event has pulled in the crowds every year since it began in 2007, creating a unique late-night party atmosphere.

Manchester Cathedral have supported the event, along with headline sponsor BetFred.

The BBC Radio Manchester presenter will be hosting the main stage at this year’s Manchester bee themed fundraising event in aid of St Ann’s, and is hoping as many local people as possible will join him.

Every year more than 1,000 people gather together at Manchester Cathedral to take part in the Midnight Walk to raise money for St Ann’s.  It’s always such an amazing event and I’m really looking forward to hosting the stage for the pre-walk entertainment again this year. Participants very often wear fancy dress on the night, and this year the hospice is encouraging people to embrace the Manchester bee theme – the Midnight Walk’s colours are yellow and black so it fits in perfectly!  Don’t worry if you don’t like fancy dress though, please do sign up and come along and say hello anyway.  The more the merrier, and it’s all in aid of a fantastic local cause. Every year at the walk I am reminded how amazing the people in our great city are.  Standing on the stage at Manchester Cathedral watching everyone set off at midnight is always very exciting, but is also quite emotional when you think that many are raising money for someone special.  Hospices make such a difference to the lives of patients and their loved ones, and being part of an event which helps them to raise money to fund their vital work is amazing.

Phil Trow, BBC Radio Manchester presenter

The walk leaves Manchester Central at midnight, with music and entertainment on the event stage starting at 9pm. The 10km route covers landmarks such as Manchester Cathedral, St Ann’s Square and Spinningfields. Many fundraisers walk in memory of loved ones, with others happy to join the fun at this family event.

Children from schools will be buzzing as they embrace the city’s iconic bee as a theme and put their best foot forward for charity

Schools are already signing up to take part in the Manchester Midday Walk in April, with youngsters of all ages choosing to take on the bee themed sponsored walk challenge in aid of St Ann’s.

Schools can choose their own distance for their sponsored Manchester Midday Walk, and set their own date in April for the Walk to take place.

Our Manchester Midnight Walk is hugely popular, having been a highlight of our fundraising calendar for thirteen years.  Participants of the Midnight Walk are over 11 years of age, and we’ve had a real demand for a similar event which is suitable for younger children too. We’re really pleased that we’ve been able to respond to that demand with the brand new Manchester Midday Walk.  We’re asking schools to sign up now to take part, and they can choose their own distance and date in April to do the sponsored walk.  It’s really exciting that schools are already embracing the idea, and we can’t wait to hear all about their plans for their walks. As a Greater Manchester charity, we’re always proud to be part of our local community and we’re  encouraging schools to embrace the Manchester bee theme in their plans for the Manchester Midday Walk.  The Midnight Walk has a Manchester bee theme this year, so it’s great to carry that through to this exciting new school fundraiser too – we’re buzzing to see everyone embracing it and showing their pride in our great city.

Eamonn O’Neal, Chief Executive of St Ann’s

One school that has already signed up to take part in the Manchester Midday Walk is Norbury Hall Primary in Hazel Grove.

As a school our pupils selected St Ann’s Hospice as our chosen charity this year. The children wanted to support a local charity and felt strongly that St Ann’s would benefit greatly. We have received a tremendous amount of contact from the St Ann’s team, including visits from staff and fundraising ideas. The children are very proud to be part of the launch for this new project.

We’re appealing to businesses who may want to ‘putt’ a team forward for our Golf Day

We have opened registration for our popular annual Golf Day which sees business people from across Greater Manchester gather together to raise money for local patients with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

The Golf Day will be held at the beautiful Dunham Forest on Thursday 16th May, starting at 12.30pm.  The teams of four will enjoy a light lunch on arrival, followed by a shotgun start at 2pm. Complimentary refreshments will be available at the Halfway House, and following play participants can enjoy a relaxed two course meal, followed by competition winner presentations, raffle and auction.  Non players are also welcome to join teams at the meal and presentations.

For those local businesses who would like to be involved in other ways, sponsorship options are also available. The fundraising team at the hospice is also keen to hear from local businesses who might be able to donate prizes for the special event.

The support we receive from local businesses is incredibly important to our sustainability and to help us ensure we can continue providing care to patients and their loved ones. We’re incredibly lucky to have such a wide range of dedicated, supportive businesses that help the hospice in so many ways, and our annual Golf Day is always a popular way of doing so. Some people come along as a team building day out, whilst others bring clients with them, but however they get involved, we’re hugely grateful.

Eamonn O’Neal, Chief Executive of St Ann’s

Bhim Ruia Foundation is proud to sponsor part of this event at our home course.  We thoroughly enjoyed last year’s golf day and are really looking forward to joining the team from St Ann’s again this time around. With home advantage, one would think we should be favourites!

We’ve opened our fifteenth charity shop in Greater Manchester!

Our Trading Company has added a new shop to its portfolio of fourteen high street and online outlets by opening a brand new shop on Stockport Road in Ardwick.

The specialist furniture shop will sell a range of new and pre-loved furniture items, electrical goods, white goods and homeware. The shop will be offering 10% discount for students on donated items.

Our furniture shop in Ladybarn is always incredibly popular, especially with students and landlords, and so we’re really excited to open this shop in Ardwick where it is surrounded by a great local community. All our shops are really busy community hubs – so busy in fact that we really need some extra support from willing volunteers! We need volunteer drivers, drivers mate and shop assistants to help us out. It’s vital we recruit volunteers so that we can provide our services, and there’s such a wide range of roles for people to support us with we’re hoping there’s something that will appeal to everyone. We need help with everything from serving customers to collecting and delivering furniture and also help with our newly launched house clearance service. We give full training and support, and we’d be keen to hear from anyone aged 16 and over who thinks they might be able to help out – even for a few hours a week. Every small contribution makes a huge difference to our patients. Our house clearance service is proving really popular, so if you are moving, downsizing, or just have a garage or unit that you want help clearing, we can support you with that as well. We’re urging as many people as possible who may have items to donate to get in touch. We’d love to hear from you.

Amanda Brooks, Head of the St Ann’s Hospice Trading Company

Do you want to get your affairs in order and help raise vital funds to support patients across Greater Manchester?

Our Will Week is an annual campaign, this year it runs from March 11th to 15th, which sees dozens of kind-hearted solicitors giving their time for free to help people make their Will. Instead of charging their usual fee, supporters can make a donation to St Ann’s.

Margaret Poole, a volunteer at St Ann’s Hospice, updated her Will during the campaign last year.

I’d been putting off changing my Will, like most people it just wasn’t something I wanted to think about. I had already made one, but after some changes in my family circumstances, I needed to update it. Seeing the leaflets for the St Ann’s Will Week prompted me to take part – it allowed me to make the changes I needed whilst supporting St Ann’s with a donation. I saw a solicitor who was local to me, they were really good and it was an easy process. To anyone who hasn’t made or recently updated their Will, I’d say you’ve got to think about these things. It’s not for you, it’s for those who you leave behind so you don’t leave them in a mess. It’s easy to let years go by, but it really is something everyone needs to think about.

Emmerdale star Chris Bisson is putting on his running shoes to join people in a special challenge

The actor has pledged to take part in our Sixty in 60 challenge, which was devised by one of our long-term supporters, Mitchell Brough, from Fallowfield who has done the Great Manchester run six times for St Ann’s.

The challenge is to recruit over sixty people to join Chris and Mitch to take part in this year’s Great Manchester Run – and for each participant to aim to finish the 10km run in 60 minutes.

Team members will receive free entry into the run, with the charity asking that they try to raise a minimum of £200 in sponsorship.  They’ll also have the opportunity to train with some of the other team members before the run, will receive a free #TeamStAnns running vest and a special fundraising pack.  There’ll also be a post-race reception for the Sixty in 60 team at a venue in the city centre to celebrate completion of the run.

St Ann’s is a really special place that’s been looking after our community for nearly 50 years.  It’s difficult to explain just how wonderful St Ann’s is and I’m hoping that by raising awareness as well as money, I can help spread the word about how St Ann’s is a warm, welcoming place that wraps its arms around people when they’re at their most vulnerable.  Although the care to patients and families is completely free, it actually takes a huge amount of money to be able to do that. I’m hoping that everyone will get behind us on this run and we can try and make a real difference. My fiancée, Rowena, has just signed up and I’m hoping to rope in some of my Emmerdale and Corrie colleagues too. Come and join us!

Chris Bisson

I wanted to find a really creative way to inspire as many people as possible to join Team St Ann’s and take part in the run this year, and I think that the Sixty in 60 challenge will do just that.  If 60 people each raise £200 it will mean £12,000 for the hospice, which I know will make a huge difference to the local patients they care for. January is always the time of year when people set themselves new goals, and what better way to get fit than by joining a fun challenge that also helps raise money for local people who really need our support?  Aiming to complete the 10km run in 60 minutes is a challenge but is certainly accessible to most people if they start to train now.  We’re happy to support people along the way, and the positive spirit of the Team St Ann’s runners always spurs me on whenever I run to raise money for them.  We’re also welcoming runners of all abilities, so even if you don’t think you will make the 60 minutes target, please sign up anyway – we’d love to have you as part of Team St Anns.

I’m very pleased we’ve been able to assist St Ann’s Hospice. They do an outstanding job helping people with life-limiting illnesses, as well as supporting their families through very difficult times.

Ian MacNeil, Freemasons Salford District Charity Steward

As a charity we’re enormously grateful for the support of the East Lancashire Freemasons, and we’re thrilled that they have chosen us to receive this grant. It will make a real difference to the lives of local patients and their loved ones.
