Tee up to support your local charity

We’ve opened registration for our popular annual Golf Day which sees teams from across Greater Manchester gather together to raise money for local patients with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

The Golf Day will be held at the beautiful Cheadle Golf Club on Thursday 2nd September, starting at 9am.  This one-day event will be a fun, informal day of golfing, open to all levels, giving teams the opportunity to practice their putting and sharpen your swing whilst raising vital funds for St Ann’s during our 50th anniversary year.

Tickets cost just £100 per one team of four golfers. On the day, we’ll be hosting a raffle with a selection of luxury prizes, plus we’ll be offering tea, coffee, and bacon sandwiches on arrival and a choice from the BBQ for lunch after your team has played.

The support we receive from local businesses is incredibly important to our sustainability and to help us ensure we can continue providing care to patients and their loved ones.
We’re incredibly lucky to have such a wide range of dedicated, supportive businesses that help the hospice in so many ways, and our annual Golf Day is always a popular way of doing so. Some people come along as a team building day out, whilst others bring clients with them, but however they get involved, we’re hugely grateful.

Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive of St Ann’s

I lost my partner to cancer and she spent the last remaining days of her life at a hospice and the staff were so kind and helpful. Therefore, I decided to try and help raise money for the hospice. We thoroughly enjoyed previous golf days organised by St Ann’s and are really looking forward to putting a team forward again in September.

George Hadden, Participant

For those local businesses who would like to be involved in other ways, sponsorship options are also available. The fundraising team at the hospice is also keen to hear from local businesses who might be able to donate prizes for the special event.

Volunteer with St Ann’s!

Following a huge increase in customer numbers after the easing of lockdown restrictions, we’re putting out an urgent appeal for volunteers to support staff in our online sales team and shops across Greater Manchester.

St Ann’s is asking local people to consider donating just a few hours of their time each week to help shop staff raise vital funds to support local patients.

Amanda Brooks, Head of the St Ann’s Trading Company, said: “It’s fantastic that customers are embracing their new freedoms by coming to purchase new and pre-loved goods at our covid-safe shops.

“As a result of the fabulous increase in footfall, it’s vital we recruit more volunteers as soon as possible to support our team.  There’s such a wide range of volunteering roles available, and we’re hoping there’s something that will appeal to everyone.

“We need help with everything from window displays and merchandising to serving customers, steaming clothes and organising books.  We’re also keen to hear from anyone who might be able to assist with weekend support in our new bridal boutique in Stockport.

“Our online sales team and staff at our distribution centre in Reddish are also looking for support from people who could help with photography, posting and packing, and sorting goods for our shops too.”

Our shops generate thousands of pounds worth of income every year for St Ann’s – income which enables our hospices to continue to provide care to local patients with cancer and other life- limiting illnesses.

Amanda added: “The role of a charity shop volunteer has really changed in recent years, and we see people of all ages who come to us and really benefit from, and enjoy, the experience.

“St Ann’s has to raise around £20,000 every day to keep the doors open, and we simply couldn’t do it without our army of loyal volunteers.  We have people who support us for a variety of reasons, some are job seekers looking to build their CV, others are retired people who are looking for a new challenge, and we also work with students who are helping broaden their skillset too.

“We give full training and support, and we’d be keen to hear from anyone aged 16 and over who thinks they might be able to help out – even for a few hours a week.  Every small contribution makes a huge difference to our patients.”

Anyone interested in supporting our hospice can call 0161 477 7839 from 10am to 2pm Monday to Friday, pop into their local hospice shop and ask for details or fill in a form online.

Win £50 with St Ann’s Scratchcards!

Fancy getting your hands on a £50 prize, whilst also supporting St Ann’s?

When Covid-19 restrictions limited many of the fundraising events and activities that we had planned for our 50th birthday year, our teams had to think creatively to come up with solutions to help raise the £20,000 a day needed to care for patients.

Knitting challenges, plant growing, duck races, and prize-winning scratch cards are just some of the ways that local people can get involved in our half a century celebrations throughout 2021.

Special limited edition anniversary scratch cards offer you the chance to sell word squares for £2.50 to their family and friends, before revealing the winning word hidden behind the scratch-off panel.  The person who has chosen the winning slot will receive £50, with the remaining £50 being donated to St Ann’s.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been part of St Ann’s history over the last half a century, whether as patients, family members, staff, volunteers, or supporters, and we’d love as many of those as possible to come forward and help us celebrate.

These scratch cards are just one of the many ways people can join in, and they come with the added bonus of a special prize too – the supporters win, and our patients do too thanks to the donations made.

We’re hugely proud to have reached our 50th birthday, and it’s only thanks to the local community that we’ve been able to do that.  That’s especially true over the last year when we’ve all been working really hard to continue providing care throughout the pandemic.

We’re providing a huge range of services to local people, whether via our inpatient units on our hospice sites, or virtually.  We’re also caring for people in their own homes, or the place they call home, and I’m really proud of how we’ve adapted to continue doing that despite the obvious challenges that have come with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive

To mark our 50th year, we’ve created a special ‘50 ways to support St Ann’s’ guide which features a range of fundraising ideas, as well as other ways people can get involved such as in our shops, by playing our lottery or helping to spread the word on social media.

Rachel added: “We know it’s been a strange time for everyone, and even though lots of our birthday events and activities sadly can’t go ahead as planned due to the current restrictions and guidance, we’re really excited that there are still lots of ways people can be part of the celebrations.

“Please join us in whatever way you can – any support, whether big or small is hugely appreciated and will mean a lot to our patients and their loved ones.  It will also be fun to be part of it too, I promise!”

School Children all smiles at St Ann’s

Manchester City’s magic touch rubbed off on schoolchildren who brought smiles to St Ann’s. The club’s charity City in the Community (CITC) helped Year 4 pupils at Etchells Primary School, Heald Green, make pictures and postcards for hospice patients and staff.

The designs were part of a six-week social action project organised by CITC at the school where they had also been running sports classes.

CITC schools sports coach Stjon Clement said: “The school already had good links with St Ann’s and it was the pupils’ idea to create cards and pictures with uplifting messages for patients and staff.

“It was fantastic seeing how well they did and the result of the project brought a big smile to the face of everyone at the hospice.

“The aim was also to help educate children about what St Ann’s does and make them realise how it’s possible to assist the wider community as well.”

CITC uses football to promote health, education and inclusion to improve the lives of young people in Manchester and beyond.

It’s fantastic that the children from Etchells Primary and City in the Community have thought of our staff and patients in such a lovely way. The team have worked so hard on the front line throughout the pandemic to ensure local patients could continue receiving specialist hospice care when they needed it most. We’re all really touched by the pictures and cards, and can’t thank everyone enough for thinking of us.

St Ann’s Virtual Balloon Race

We’re inviting supporters to end their  summer term on a high by joining our eco-friendly, virtual balloon race.

St Ann’s is asking families, schools and community groups to mark the end of the summer term by buying a balloon to set off flying in a virtual race. Participants will be able to track how far they fly over the week-long race and be in with the chance of winning £500 for the balloon that travels the furthest.

As we’ve spent most of the past year at home, we’ve probably all been dreaming of the places we want to fly away to in the future. This virtual balloon race is the perfect way to end the summer term on a high. We’re delighted to be able to bring our popular balloon race back for our 50th birthday year, completely eco-friendly and virtual for 2021. We’re hoping lots of people get involved and show their support for their local hospice and buy a balloon as a class, or for their children and little ones in their lives. Help us fill the sky with virtual St Ann’s balloons to celebrate our big birthday.

Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive

Balloons cost £3 and participants can personalise the online balloons with a name, colour and a message of  good luck or dedication to someone.

Balloons from charities across the UK will be entered into the race and the lucky balloon that travels the furthest will win £500, with the second place balloon winning an Apple iPad. Ten runners up will also win a £10 book token, and there will also be a prize specifically for the St Ann’s balloon which travels the furthest.

Sixteen Firewalk for St Ann’s

Participants in the St Ann’s sponsored Firewalk event hot-footed it over 20ft of wood embers, burning at 1236 degrees Fahrenheit – all to raise money to help patients with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

Run in accordance with government Covid-19 guidance, the event took place at our Little Hulton site, with those brave enough to try the challenge supported by expert Firewalk organisers Blaze.

Sponsorship raised so far by the sixteen walkers who took part exceeds £5,000, a sum which will help our teams to continue providing care for local people.

After such a difficult year, it was – quite literally – heart-warming to see our first small fundraising event taking place. The brave participants took on the once in a lifetime challenge in such good spirits, and we are so grateful for their support. It’s our 50th anniversary this year, and throughout 2021 there are lots of ways people can get involved and support St Ann’s. We’re one of the oldest and largest hospices outside of London and so proud to have reached this amazing anniversary milestone, but we’ve only been able to do so thanks to the community who support us. Their unending enthusiasm is incredible, and I’m looking forward to the rest of this celebratory year. Thanks again to all of the fabulous Firewalkers.
