St Ann’s Hospice Vintage and Bridal store re-launch a big success!

The St Ann’s Hospice Vintage and Bridal charity shop has been through an incredible transformation with the re-launch party being a tremendous success.

The Stockport shop has been described as a rare treasure trove that specialises in vintage items on the ground floor with a bridal boutique on the second floor.

The shop located at 33 Great Underbank opened the doors to the newly renovated store to the public for a sneak peak of new stock. Those who attended also enjoyed a glass of fizz, cakes and live music from Honey I Shrunk The Band, a local acoustic band.

It was wonderful to see the turnout at our relaunch event. It was clear that people were impressed with the refurbishment and enjoyed browsing and purchasing from our stock. The party gave us a chance to promote different and more sustainable ways for people to shop.

Fernanda de Costa, Shop Manager

Demi Nicole Lanigan who was crowned Miss Earth England Air was at the shop for the relaunch event. Fernanda said she had a great time modelling a bridal dress.

“She is a big advocate for sustainability, and she actually purchased one of her dresses for Miss Earth England from our store. Her presence at the event was lovely,” Fernanda said.

Commenting on the event, Demi said: “Huge thank you to Fernanda for inviting me as a special guest, to such a lovely event and the reopening of St Ann’s Vintage and Bridal store…

“I’ve always loved this store and everything it stands for. Vintage and second-hand fashion isn’t just beautiful, it’s a way to shop more sustainably and give gorgeous pieces a second home,” she added.

The refurbishment of the St Ann’s Hospice Vintage and Bridal charity shop would have been impossible without a grant from Stockport Council, in partnership with the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Peter Haymes, Development & Regeneration Manager: Markets & Underbanks at Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council commented.

“Stockport Council, in partnership with the National Lottery Heritage Fund, are delivering a transformational heritage-led regeneration project in the fantastic Underbanks. Enhancing the built form and bringing buildings back to their best is the primary aim, together with reconnecting the people of Stockport to the history of this area.

“We were delighted that St Ann’s Hospice, together with the building owner, took the opportunity to enhance their building with a new beautifully crafted hardwood shop front and redecoration of the external elevation. This has not only enhanced the street scene, but also given the shop a new lease of life. For more information follow our Insta @underbanks_SK,” he said.

The St Ann’s Vintage and Bridal charity shop is open from Tuesday to Saturday between the hours of 9.30 am and 4.30pm.

Support a great cause and donate to the St Ann’s vintage and bridal store. Your pre-loved wedding gowns, vintage treasures, and special occasion wear can find a new home while making a meaningful difference. Every donation helps St Ann’s continue its vital work.

St Ann’s makes switch to LED lights in eco-friendly move

St Ann’s Hospice has begun a roll out of LED lights across its shops, warehouse and trading office as part of the efforts to lower the organisation’s carbon footprint.

Seven of the St Ann’s Hospice charity shops along with the warehouse and the Trading office have now been fitted with the lights, with the charity shop in Altrincham due to be completed next week.

These LED lights will greatly reduce the organisation’s energy consumption and costs while creating a brighter and more welcoming environment for customers, staff, and volunteers.

Head of Trading at St Ann’s Hospice Ryan Perkins said the project was partially funded through the Growth Company, a Manchester-based organization that helps businesses improve efficiency.

“This initiative aligns with our strategic goals by supporting financial viability and fostering growth for future sustainability. It also reflects our commitment to ensuring that our buildings, facilities, and estate are fit for purpose and able to support outstanding person-centred care,” Ryan said.

The LED lights are expected to save almost ten tonnes of carbon emissions each year.

St Ann’s Hospice launches Vinted store

St Ann’s Hospice have expanded its online trading by creating a profile on popular online marketplace site, Vinted.

Vinted has grown in popularity over the last number of years in the United Kingdom and now St Ann’s is selling pre-loved clothes and various other items on the platform.

All profit raised goes to St Ann’s Hospice.

Head of Trading as St Ann’s Hospice, Ryan Perkins said the launch of the Vinted store keeps St Ann’s up to date with current times.

Our Vinted store allows us to connect with a broader audience while continuing to raise crucial funds for the compassionate care we provide. We’ve already seen fantastic feedback on purchases.

Ryan Perkins, Head of Trading as St Ann’s Hospice

By shopping with us, you’re not just finding unique pre-loved items—you’re helping to make a real difference in the lives of patients and their loved ones,” Ryan added.

Bride says ‘I do’ to vintage St Ann’s Hospice charity shop wedding dress

Jo and Matt Johnson

A newlywed from Greater Manchester purchased her wedding dress from the St Ann’s Hospice Bridal and Vintage shop in Stockport as a way of paying tribute to her mother, June Kiely.

Jo Johnson (nee Kiely) came to the store in secret with her maid of honour in January and was feeling apprehensive about looking for her dress as it’s “usually something a girl does with her mum”.

Having lost her mum in 2015, Jo thought it fitting to buy her wedding dress from one of St Ann’s charity shops as her mum received the “most incredible” care at the hospice’s Little Hulton facility.

“They have continued to support me with grief counselling since,” Jo said.

Jo believed that coming to St Ann’s seemed like a good way to include her mum in the process and to give back to the hospice.

“It was a wonderful experience and it really helped me with the process and of course the decision.”

Jo was married to her husband Matt on Sunday, August 18 in a ceremony she was worried was going to be emotional from start to finish due to the loss of her mum and her brother who passed away suddenly two years later.

“It was the most incredible day from start to finish and I beamed, and grinned, and danced all day and I felt like a million bucks in my vintage dress.”

New year, new you?

A man carrying a table out of the furniture van

Are you determined to get on top of your life admin in 2024? Now that the festivities are over, is January the time to start ticking off some of those tasks on the to-do list and get sorted for the new year? Here at St Ann’s, we are here to help. We have various opportunities and resources below to make your life a little easier.

Recycle your Christmas tree

Not sure what to do with your tree now that Christmas is over?

We have partnered with the charity JustHelping, who will collect and recycle your Christmas tree in return for a welcome donation to the Hospice.

Register your tree for collection via the JustHelping website, and our volunteers will pick up your tree between 11th and 14th January 2024.

Free furniture collection

Out with the old, in with the new… If you have furniture you’d like to donate to our charity shops, we can provide a free collection service, so you have one less problem to think about!

All details relating to donations and the collection form can be found here.

Clothing donations

New year, new wardrobe? If the new year has spurred you on to have a clear out and you’re wondering what to do with your unwanted clothes, we’d welcome your donations at one of our many charity shops in and around the Manchester area.

Visit our ‘Donating Goods‘ page for further details.

Payroll giving

Have you been thinking about setting up a regular charitable donation? Did you know Payroll giving is a tax-efficient scheme that allows employees to give more for less? You can set up regular donations to our hospice through your payroll before tax.

Payroll giving is simple to set up, tax-efficient, and provides businesses with the chance to improve their social responsibility; all while providing the hospice with reliable and consistent donations, allowing us to better plan ahead to provide care to our patients.

Check if your company offers payroll giving or tell them about it and encourage them to sign up.

Our guide to payroll giving can be found here.

Free Will-writing service

Getting around to writing a Will is something that can stay on the to-do list for a long time, but it is so important for everyone to make one. This March is Will Month, so it is the perfect time to get sorted. Local solicitors will be waiving their Will-writing fees when you donate to St Ann’s. Details of how you can book an appointment during Will Month can be found here.

Celebrating International Volunteers Day with Beth

I start work at 10am and it’s always lovely to be welcomed so warmly by Esme, the Shop Manager, and Duck, (David), who also works Wednesdays.

Jackie is also often in on a Wednesday and it’s so nice to see familiar faces.

When your life revolves around being at home with your kids, it gives an extra sense of belonging. It’s not a stuffy, serious vibe at work, it’s very much a friendship feel, with good banter and a chance to get to know each other.

This means the team can feel like your support system, when you’re waffling about the trials and tribulations of life, or parenting! It also extends your friendship circle when you bump into them whilst out!

One of my main duties now includes working on Facebook. I check with Esme which section she wants me to concentrate on that day, e.g. Ladies, Men’s, Kids, Christmas etc, and I take lots of pictures of things that I think will sell well. I then upload them to the St Ann’s Romiley Facebook page, along with details of all the ways people can get in touch with us and details of any special offers on that day.

Once uploaded, I then share the post to many different Facebook groups around the Stockport area. Once that’s done, I reply to any messages that come through, checking the size of an item, or price, or asking us to hold an item for up to 48 hours.

As well as Facebook duties, I also work on the till., putting purchases through or printing out labels for donations received. I also encourage customers to sign up to Gift Aid

When customers come into the shop with bags of donations, I take them through to the back so that they can be sorted. I’m a very social, outgoing person, so I love interacting with the customers and will always greet them as they enter and leave the shop.

I’m more than happy to chat with them if they look like they’d appreciate that!

I love knowing that whilst I get a lot out of volunteering, it’s also for a bigger cause and a bigger picture.

Beth Crowcroft, Volunteer Shop Assistant

I finish work at 12pm, having packed lots into the two hours I’m there. Over the course of the five years I’ve been at Romiley St Ann’s shop, the amount of time spent volunteering weekly has varied. I initially did one morning a week and then built it up to two mornings a week.

Due to home circumstances, I then needed to go back down to one morning a week. I love the flexibility that comes with volunteering here.

Here’s to many more years volunteering at Romiley St Ann’s shop, as it really is such a welcoming, friendly place!

Winter bargains at our Stockport bridal and vintage shop

Our Stockport store has a specialist bridal boutique on its first floor, which has an excellent range of brand new or hardly worn wedding dresses being sold this winter.

There will be great prices too on all bridesmaid dresses, mother of the bride and groom outfits, as well as further discounts in the ground floor vintage shop on all vintage items and books.

The sale is flaunting brand new and excellent condition outfits that are perfect for any weddings or festive occasions you might have coming up.

Jules Lamb is the Acting Manager of our Stockport store and she’s encouraging anyone in need of a wedding outfit or vintage items to go down to the shop for this season’s bargains.

“I help to run the St Ann’s Hospice Stockport shop to raise funds for its services, which cover much of Greater Manchester and parts of Cheshire. There is a dedicated specialist bridal and occasion dress shop on the second floor, which has the latest styles on offer for great value for money.

All of the dresses at our shop are on sale for £200 or less until the end of November, with lots of dresses available that have only been worn once or are brand new.

Jules Lamb , Stockport Shop Manager

“We know people love to recycle and be more environmentally conscious, so we love to support this to make sure our customers get pre-loved dresses that are in excellent condition.”

The money raised from each dress is so important in supporting our hospice which helps many people in Greater Manchester with end-of-life care.

There are appointments for fittings all day from Tuesday to Saturday, and the store caters to everyone’s needs for their dress, with accessories to match and a recommended seamstress just down the road from the shop.
