Local business is celebrating after raising tens of thousands of pounds for St Ann’s

Stockport Homes has raised a massive £33,329.41 for us during their two year Charity of the Year partnership, taking part in numerous initiatives including treks, dress down days, raffles, bake sales, a pub quiz, participation in a Dragon Boat Race, a 24 hour cycle relay (Cyclone24) and our Colour Run event.

The team were also crowned the Ultimate Accumulator as part of the St Ann’s Accumulator Challenge two years in a row.  Last October, the Accumulator – which is pitched as a Dragons’ Den meets The Apprentice fundraiser – saw the company grow an initial amount of £100 into £3,917 for the charity, beating other local businesses to win the accolade.

Eamonn O’Neal, Chief Executive of St Ann’s, said: “We can’t thank Stockport Homes enough for all of their support and we’re sure they’ll remain a firm friend of the hospice.

“St Ann’s has been a part of the local communities it serves for almost half a century, but we will only be able to continue to provide our care thanks to partnerships with individuals and businesses like Stockport Homes.  At this time of political and economic uncertainty, I’m always amazed and overwhelmed that so many people decide to throw themselves into supporting our cause so wholeheartedly – and Stockport Homes have certainly done that.

“Their endless enthusiasm for supporting our charity has really shone through over the last two years, and they’ve been a pleasure to work alongside.  They’ve raised a phenomenal amount of money, which we’re hugely grateful for, and I’d like to thank them on behalf of all of our patients, families, staff and volunteers.”

Will you be joining the Walker family for this year’s Manchester Midnight Walk?

Leah Walker, Mike Walker, Carrie Burke

St Ann’s flagship fundraising event is back, and this year there’s a new date and venue. The walk takes place on Friday 27th April, beginning and ending at the iconic Manchester Cathedral.

Carrie Burke and Leah Walker will be taking part for the second time, in memory of their Dad, Mike, who was a patient at St Ann’s in 2016. They say: “A difficult time was made easier for all of us by the team at St Ann’s. There was such a warm feeling when we came in.  As a family, we were always made to feel so welcome and comfortable, and we were so well supported.

“St Ann’s offers much more than medical care. Dad had laughed and joked his whole life and in the hospice he could be himself again, and we could get back to being his daughters rather than his carers.

“We’ve done lots of fundraising for St Ann’s since Dad died. We’ve raised around £6,000 so far and want to carry on. Last year was the first time we’d taken part in the Manchester Midnight Walk. We did it with lots of our family and friends and it was good fun, and we’ll be there again this year. It’s our way of saying thank you for looking after our Dad.”

Eamonn O’Neal, Chief Executive of St Ann’s, said: “The walk is such an amazing event, and it’s incredible to see so many people joining together to raise money for our cause. Many walkers take part in memory of loved ones, whilst others join in simply for a night of fun and fundraising to help us raise the money we need to continue providing our services.”

Interested walkers can sign up to take part in the 10km moonlit stroll now, by clicking here or calling 0161 498 3631.

The decorations may have been packed away, but we’ve received a very special post-Christmas boost

Justhelping Christmas tree recycling

National charity JustHelping, which organises Christmas tree collections in aid of hospices across the UK, has made a donation of £17,500 to St Ann’s to help us support local patients.

Around 100 volunteers collected more than 1,600 trees from homes in the Stockport, Heatons, Altrincham and Hale areas, as part of a major community recycling initiative.

Members of the public could make a donation to the charity to have their tree collected, with a fifth of the total raised allocated to local charities nominated by the volunteer organisations involved in collecting the trees.  The rest was donated to us.

Clare Hinton, JustHelping’s Chief Executive, said: “We’d like to thank everyone who made a donation and to all of the amazing volunteers who made the collections possible.

“Trees were gathered over two days in early January and our volunteers included the 3rd Hazel Grove Scouts group, Friends of John Leigh Park, the ladies from the Gossip Girls in Bramhall and Cheadle, and members of Didsbury and Bramhall Cricket club, amongst others.  It’s impossible to mention everyone by name, but we are so appreciative of all of the time and energy everyone gave to making this happen.

“JustHelping is all about communities coming together to do something amazing for local charities and hospices, and we’re thrilled that we’ve been able to do just that by raising such a huge amount of money.”

The charity gained sponsorship from Famous Henrys, Oscars Pet Food, Roost Rotisserie (Heaton Moor) and Lovell (Altrincham) which enabled the printing of leaflets and banners to promote the initiative, as well as social media promotion boosts.  Bramhall Cricket Club and Bowden Rugby Club allowed the use of their land and facilities for teams, whilst Spectrum Plant hire provided the free loan of the tree chipper, and Treework Arboricultural Services helped with chipping of the trees.

Europcar also supported the initiative with the free loan of vans for the collections, with 121 Systems of Nottingham helping with routing maps for the volunteers to collect the trees.

RF Fielding of Dean Farm, Woodford supplied the vehicles to remove the chippings and the chipped trees were taken to Dean Farm where they will be used for mulch ensuring complete recycling of the Christmas trees.

St Ann’s Chief Executive, Eamonn O’Neal, said: “As a charity that has been part of the local communities we serve for almost half a century we’re always amazed and humbled to see so many people coming together in support of our patients.

“The JustHelping tree recycling initiative has brought together many people from those local communities and we’re enormously grateful for everyone’s time and effort in raising such an amazing amount.  It will make a huge difference to our patients and their families, and we can’t thank everyone who took part or donated enough.”

JustHelping was founded in Prestbury in 2012 through philanthropic support.

Generous music lover, Brian, donates his lifelong vinyl collection to St Ann’s

Brian Malcolm and his vinyl collection

A valuable collection of 5,000 vinyl records charting the history of popular and classical music has been donated to St Ann’s.

Music lover Brian Malcolm has generously handed over the LPs to us from his lifelong personal library.

The records spanning a golden age of music from the Fifties to the Nineties are now on sale on our St Ann’s eBay site and at our charity shop at Great Underbank in Stockport town centre.

Brian, aged 81, delved into his archives to help us after we were featured on the BBC regional television programme North West Tonight.

An item about a Victorian notebook which had been donated to our St Ann’s book shop drew his attention, prompting him to donate a sizeable proportion of his collection which is kept at his home in mid-Derbyshire.

We’ve received mostly 12-inch LP vinyl records, plus seven-inch 45s, which for decades was how music was played.

Brian said: “I live 50 miles away from Manchester so didn’t know anything about St Ann’s until I saw its shop on television and was impressed by the attractive appearance.

“The records will appeal to a broad interest and are in very good condition. Most won’t have seen a stylus because it was impossible to play them all.

“After all, you don’t expect to read all the books in a library either! Hopefully, people will want to buy the records and support the hospice.

“CDs made a takeover bid in 1983 but the serious audio enthusiast, or collector of original performances, still kept their turntable and the market trend for vinyl is on a prominent upturn today.”

The donation includes:

* 3,000 Classicals from Light Orchestral, Opera, Symphonies, Savoy and Operetta (Gilbert and Sullivan etc).

* 1,000 Brass and Military bands, Colliery and Works bands, Church and Sacred/Choral, German etc oom-pah bands.

* 1,000 50s/60s pop, favourite orchestras from Palm Court to Mantovani, James Last, Kai Warner, Bert Kampfaert, Mexican and Tijuana, single male and female vocals, groups, ballroom, sequence, Old Tyme Dancing , films and shows.

Brian said: “I was given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in the 1980s on a business visit to EMI Abbey Road on behalf of the RAF Amateur Radio Society.

“A warehouse full of records was due for demolition and its content of around 2.7 million records was to be sold. When the business manager mentioned a price, me and a friend raised a mortgage to buy them. The offer was too good to miss.”

Ryan Perkins, Sales Development Manager at St Ann’s, said: “We’re extremely grateful to Brian for his kind donation. We’re having the records valued and I’m sure people will find some old memories from the music.

“Some are quite specialist and there’s a lot of dance music which is still extremely popular, especially in Japan where there’s a big market.”

* To see the list of records go to stores.ebay.co.uk/St-Anns-Hospice-Trading-Company or visit the St Ann’s charity shop at Great Underbank, Stockport.

A love of antiques has inspired Nikki Baker in her quest to help St Ann’s

Nikki Baker

Nikki is a valuer for auctioneer Adam Partridge, one of the country’s best known antiques experts after his appearances on TV shows including Flog It!, Bargain Hunt and Cash in the Attic.

Her instinctive ability to name a price for those long-forgotten possessions was inherited from dad Alistair, a keen collector as Nikki grew up.

Our 14 charity shops are stocked with items donated by the public and Nikki advises on the most profitable form of sale, with revenue funding patient care.

That could mean placing goods on the shelves, via our flourishing eBay site or auctioning them off as part of Adam’s monthly auctions in Macclesfield.

Nikki, from Woodford, passed an audition for the St Ann’s Hospice Festival Choir in 2010 and three years later left her job as a director with the NHS where she had worked for 26 years.

She said: “One part of my job was to support the contractual obligations the NHS has with organisations like St Ann’s Hospice which led me to further support through fundraising.

“I changed my career direction and had always liked auctions with a special interest in antiques, jewellery and furniture.

“I trained as a valuer and offer guidance by giving an estimate on what an item might receive at auction. Some go to auction and Adam is a keen supporter of charities and generously waives the normal seller’s premium to all charities.

“Initially, I also volunteered in the hospice coffee shop at Heald Green and am a relief manager in the charity shops.”

Nikki, a St Ann’s ambassador, has also organised numerous charity events for us, including an annual charity ball. Husband Peter has also raised funds by running the London marathon.

A seller who thought a jade figurine left to her by a great aunt might be worth about £15 fetched £5,000 at auction thanks to Nikki.

Our Trading Company Manager Amanda Brooks said: “Nikki has great expertise in the marketplace and we’re delighted to be able to call on her skills. We’d encourage anyone willing to donate items that may be of value to contact us.”

* Our eBay site has seen a 400 per cent increase in takings in the last six months. Go to stores.ebay.co.uk/St-Anns-Hospice-Trading-Company.
